Ez-Go 400 ? found and bought.

Well New to the site.
I have 4 carts, 3 are electric 3 wheel Ez-go's that I use and
the other is a 1977 4 wheel cart that I am doing major changes to as it was a twisted,rusted wreck headed for scrap.

But I found this about a year ago,and went and got it today.
I don't know if this is the right spot for the website but I am sure a administrator will adjust as needed.

Anyhow, I have yet to find a single photo of this thing but it has to be a model 400 A,B,C or H. 1962 thru early 65.
it is rough as a cob out in the rain.
But it is all there but the canvas top and bottom seat cushion.
I have the back cushions for patterns.
The electrical system appears complete but complicated.IF i am reading right,13 solenoids in the system.I have not pulled the cover to count them.
I would like to know if the motor and drive system could be reconfigured to a new resistor cart design as far as wiring and accelerator pedal stuff. Would make it easier and cheaper as the last time I priced a 36 volt solenoid it was almost 60 bucks! 13 of them would be pricey!
From what I read this cart about put ez-go out of business because of the complicated electrical system.

Before I spend a lot of time and effort on it I need to know how to test the motor.It may be different than others I don't know.I need help.
I do know i pumped the rear tires up before I unloaded it and they turned 1 opposite from the other .I don't know if that is good or bad.
The steering works well.
There is no key in the forward ,reverse,off switch and the brake lock handle and shaft turns but I have not figured out how it works the brake yet.
Not much is known by me about this thing yet.


This thing is unlike any other cart I know of or have seen.
It has a rear suspension like a Volkswagen. I will let the photos tell the rest.
The rust dont bother me if the motor is good.I can repair the rest.
But it will not be done for a while as I have other projects going right now.
This poor thing was headed for scrap and i felt like it is odd enough it needed to be saved.

OMG......that thing OBVIOUSLY sat in one spot for a long time......seeing as how it had a pretty good size TREE growing through it!

I've seen worse carts out there that were salvaged, but that said, that thing had a TREE growing out of it!!!

Seriously, I hope you can get it worked out and find a way to do a restoration on it, I'm a sucker for old carts, especially 3 wheelers.

Yea that is why I took the "before" pics like I did.IF this thing lives again,there will be a story line and pics to go with it.
Alot to be learned before I start on this.Got to learn a motor test method.If the motor is fried and cant be rebuilt the rest is a moot point.
To be honest, this is not the worst looking thing I have drug home and made work.But my other projects are far from the subject line of this forum.

If you can discover the motor manufacturer, "luna rebuilders" http://www.lunaindustriesinc.com/armature_flatwire.html can rebuild it, or help you find brushes ect...Thats a cool looking "thing". You say it has a swing-arm style rear suspension, cool!

Yes,I pumped up the rear tires and it is siting behind the shop with the rear tires almost sideways! I would assume some battery's and people would squash it down some but also I think rust is playing a part in stuff not moving well.
I am thinking it is a ge motor but the name tag is rough looking.
I cant find a serial plate NO where.

I spy another cart in that picture - looks like a Marathon. Did you get it as well?



Also, in answer to your question about a motor test procedure:

To test run a series motor

Remove all cables from the motor; connect a jumper from A1 to S1. Connect 12 to 24 volts, positive @ A2 and negative @ S2. Swap S1 and S2 to change rotation direction.

One note I'd add, make sure the rear of the cart is safely jacked up with the wheels not touching the ground before trying this - it will remove all possibility of you getting run over if the motor does take off spinning.

This will work if you can find which terminal is which on the motor - sometimes it's stamped or marked near the posts, so you'll have to do some archeological cleaning around the terminals to see if there are any markings.

How did you get the tree out of the cart? A chain saw?

Yea, I cut the tree,first above the canopy frame then down far as I could into the body of the cart.The battery trays are about gone,had they been solid,the tree would be imbedded and alot harder to get out.But we lifted the cart straight up and away from it's 30+ year nest.When it was parked,the grass was mowed under it.The tree was 8 inchs at the stump.
The other cart, is very rough and no motor.It will be scrapped to if I dont get it,but it is actually worse then the 400. frame is totaly gone for 1 foot of it.If I can get it dirt cheap I will for the axles and parts to maintain my other carts.
My trailer would only carry 1.
I am probably going to try to remove the front wheel today or tomorow and get get it cleaned up for a tire.At least that will get it where it can be moved around.
