Weak starter???
I just started troubleshooting my starter on a G9. I have 12.6 VDC on battery, and across the selenoid relay. BUT across the starter it drops to 10.5 VDC and many times does not have enough mustart to turn the primary. If I keep mashing the gas it eventually goes (sometime up to 8 tries). Any thoughts??

Re: Weak starter???
Sounds like the starter/generator needs new brushes. Make abolutely sure your battery terminals are clean. This will cause what you are describing also.

Re: Weak starter???
Not only terminals but the cables and ends always get overlooked. Check them for internal corrosion which would reduce starting amps from a good battery. Then brushes.

Re: Weak starter???
brushes may be it. I have .8 ohm resistance from the selenoid through the switch on the gas to the battery terminal. The only voltage drop is across the motor/starter

Re: Weak starter???
How hard is it to put new brushes in the starter? Mine need new brushes as well.

Re: Weak starter???
They are not difficult to replace at all. You might run into a little trouble keeping the brushes 'pushed in' on reinstall but that is probably it: they are spring loaded if I remember correctly. You will more than likely need an impact to get the large nut off the pulley also. Check out the diagram Ron posted.
