HEI ignition module conversion

I've performed this conversion as listed in Gas tech section, but now need to change out the accompanying ignition coil. Can anyone tell me exactly which ignition coil to replace with? My auto parts store is slightly less clueless than I on this subject. If I buy a round universal type coil, is it oil-filled and has to be mounted vertically instead of the existing Ezgo that mounts horizontally? Thanks

If your parts house can't help you find a simple coil I think you should find another parts house. As per my PM to you, Not all coils are oil filled. If it's an oil filled coil mount it horizontally, if not them mount it however you want.

You can use many different coils in the conversion. Tell them you want a coil for a 1977 Chevy Nova with the 250, I-6 (....lots of options here.) This is what the I6 coil will look like and it may be cheaper than a universal round. I am not sure what it cost. No resistor to worry about, no oil and mount it however you want. This coil was/is used on MANY different engines GM produced over the years and you should have no problems finding one. Many people have done this conversion with excellent results.

Thats what I'm running in my 2 stroke ez. It cranks and runs great. I took a peice of aluminum flat and mounted it where the factory coil was mounted. I then mounted the HEI module to the aluminum flat. You HAVE TO mount the HEI module on something to allow heat to transfer.

Great news! Got it all hooked up last night and works fine. I mounted the HEI module to the left of the VR where there was enough room to bolt on. Coil mounted on the side panel close to the air cleaner. Like you, I think switching red and blue wires from pulsar to the HEI made it run better. I bought an external resistor, but haven't put it in line. Is there any reason to if it's working O.K. without it? Not sure what its purpose is really. I think it would be good to get your info stickied to the HEI module wiring diagram so idiots like me know they have to change out the coil when installing the HEI. Thanks again!

See...the thing is I don't think everyone has to change their coils. Mine did run with the stock coil but it seemed to missfire/backfire and just generally run crappy. I then changed the coil and it runs great. It has something to do with the triggering....maybe some coils have more resistance or something...who knows.

The sticky should be noted to mention the possability of changing coils. For what a coil cost its a no brainer. Also, swapping the red and blue made mine run better. Don't know why, it just seems better.

Hi Club my 89 Gas needs help . I'm at a loss, cannot find the HEI conversion on the club site. I use a MAC doesn't seem to work well.
Could someone please email the link to me at chefusa@pacbell.net.
• got a new 89 coil looks the same but has red and blue wires it won't run at all
• installed a new ignitor won't run at all
• put original equipment back starts easy but dies when it warms up. also spark looks weak. I am in the mountains and 80 miles from a tech and don't have a trailer yet.
I must repair this machine myself. I have ok mechanic skills. This one has got me stumped

Hi I was going to do this conversion also. I have the Gm/nova coil like in the pic, but was woindering how it wires up. Does the orange wire from the module just go to one post on it and the green on another to the solenoid. Does it matter which posts I use, does it need a wire ground etc. ANy help will be appreciated. Jeff
