Should be a few threads on this already, from everything I've read, you lose capacity when you go to 4 12volt batteries, so you'll have less range if you do. Brands ? Trojan or Crown, a lot of people are using Crown batteries instead of Trojans lately, I purchased a set of Crown CR190's not too long ago, and paid $130 a piece, they're extra capacity , which is what I wanted.

stay with 6-8 for longer run time, Trojan is what I have ran around 620.00 with cores.

I got a set of Crown CR190's earlier this year.
I convert from 4/12's to 6/8's.
Absolutely love my Crowns!

I'm a 4x12 kinda guy, but I definitely would convert anything that I already had working to my needs. Just like my 4x12's, 7+ years old, 50.x volts after charging, more than meets all my needs, so I will go back with the same thing. Had I had 6x8's in the cart, I would stay with them too as long as they met my needs.
