Default G29 oil leak and backfire

I have an 07 YDRA with a Plowmans kit installed over a year ago. It runs great, but started backfiring after coming to a stop pretty much every time I drive it. Yesterday I noticed an oil leak under it. I hadn’t driven it in about a week, and the leak isn’t major, but more than a couple drops. You can see the leak and the location from announce in the pictures. Where should I start to diagnose/fix the problem?

Check the oil level.

If the carb is flooding, it could cause backfiring, and it could also cause fuel to fill the crankcase, raising the volume, causing an oil leak.

I don't know, my best guess

On a Yamaha, the side case gasket or drain plug are the 2 most common leaks.
Side case gasket will be up high, near the dip stick and go down the front of the engine.
Drain plug will be obvious.
Both are easy fixes

Thanks for the info, guys. I can follow directions well, but I’m no mechanic.

I’ve got oil halfway up the dipstick. The air filter smells of gas and appears to be wet in spots. I assume this is a problem. Remember, this has a Plowman’s kit on it, so the air box is drilled and it has a Plowman’s air filter.

As for GCG’s thoughts on the gasket or plug. Plug is tight. Cover bolts are tight. Gasket may be the issue...I attached a picture of the carnage under the cart. Does this look consistent with a leaking gasket?

Side note, as seen in the 2nd picture, I found the hole in the plastic cover under the cart. How concerned should I be about that?

Oil is up pretty high on the case, so it does look lie side case gasket. I did note that you have no dirt right under the drain plug, this is common with a leak there too. So maybe a double whammy?

Plastic with a hole....no big deal unless it was hitting the fan

I really appreciate your help, GCG.

So assuming it is the case gasket, does replacing it require disassembling the cart? Based on my quick look from sliding under the cart, it doesn’t appear to have easily accessible bolts as it sits. I’d really hate to strip the cart down to replace the gasket only to find out it doesn’t fix my issue.

I’m thinking I’ll order a new gasket, and a new O ring for the drain plug.

You can have that motor out and on your bench in 20 minutes, its super simple.

I can remove the engine, change the gasket and reinstall in a hour. Granted, Ive done hundreds.

For a first timer- figure 2 hours, take your time. You will need a clutch puller, don't forget that.

I got the motor pulled and gasket off, ready to install the new one when it arrives along with my rebuilt carb from Plowman’s. Any tips on cleaning up the gasket surface or other engine parts while I have it apart? Also, where can I get torque specs for the bolts when I reinstall?

You sent your carb off to get rebuilt? Why not just clean it yourself? That seems pricey to ship and rebuild. My 08 backfires also at times. I can’t recall if it did it before the plowmans clutches were installed and his performance kit.
