Default 1982 G1 won't start question ?

Hello , I have a 1982 G! and it will not turn over when the gas pedal is depressed.
I checked all the fuses and , I am getting power to the forward's and reverse solenoids, but I don't know if just cause I am getting power to them, can they still be bad, I don't think they would have gone bad at the same time. Let me mention the cart was running fine the day before it stopped.
I put my 12v test light in the spark plug boot and stepped on the Pedal, and I am getting NO voltage. Should I be getting 12 volts out of the spark plug boot when the pedal is depressed ??? .. Thank You in advance

First of all, never ever check spark with a 12v test light. The coil puts out like 15,000volts or whatever, it'll ruin a 12v test light in an instant. Lucky for you the engine isn't turning over, to check spark simply pull the plug and lay it on the engine somewhere to get a ground and turn it over.......

Since you're getting 12v TO the solenoids when stepping on pedal that's good so far, but you need to check if there's 12v coming out of them TO the starter. My initial thought is your starter may have a dead spot, try turning the engine over by hand a little bit then step on the pedal......

I had an 82 G1 a few years ago. Throughout the 5 years I owned it I had to replace the starter once, 2 of the solenoids and the ignition switch. I don't think it's the ignition switch since you're getting 12v to the solenoids...... Good Luck

Thank You for your time and response.
Don't think it's a dead spot on the starter , had pushed the cart to the area i am working on it, and have been moving it 3-4 feet from the work space. Took the plug OUT left it connected to the Coil, held it to the muffler and pressed the pedal in both FWD and REV, and Got NO Spark.
does that suffice to say The spark plug coil is bad ?
Thanks for your time.

So the starter/gen is spinning? Or no?

If yes, and you don't have spark, then it's an ignition issue.

If no, then it's a starting system issue.

Two different problems with different solutions.

no spark when grounding plug to muffler...
but muffler is rusted ....going to ground the plug to the negative battery terminal with a jumper....and make sure it has no spark.

then it has to be the ignition coil. do you agree ???

You shouldn't need to run a ground wire. I usually lay the plug on top of the engine, I know the G1 has plastic shrouds everywhere though.

It could be the coil, they are inexpensive, so I'd try it. There are other parts to the ignition system though. Check to make sure the coil has 12v. You can test the ignition coil, just look it up on the net, you'll need a voltmeter.

So is it turning over or not? You won't be able to check spark if it's not

Somehow the OP doesn't know to answer our questions

Please let me clarify for the OP:

1. Engine spins with the starter = cranking, turning over
2. Engine starts = fires up, runs
3. Engine won't start = cranks and spins but won't catch, won't run
4. Engine has no spark = cranks and spins but no spark on spark plug

OP....can you tell us which one above applies?
