48 volt inverter installation
I have a Red Hawk 25 amp converter that came with my cart and there is no fuse on the input lead (48v side) Could anyone let me know what size/type of fuse to install. I will put a fuse block on the 12v side.

Re: 48 volt inverter installation
It should have come with an inline fuse but you can add your own 25-20A fuse on the + or - lead.

Start with a 20A fuse. Even though your converter is a 25 amp converter the 25 amp rating is it's upper limit. A 20 amp fuse won't blow if you have a 21 or 22 amp momentary spike. If you put in a 25 amp fuse, you could possibly allow 25+ amp spikes to flood delicate electronics and the converter itself. I might be way out of the park here, just my opinion. Surely others will either confirm what I've said or smash my world all around me |

Ditto. I have a 30 amp reducer and I put a 25 amp fuse inline on the positive connection to the packs voltage.

Re: 48 volt inverter installation
Welcome to BGW!
General rule of thumb for fusing the input to converters and reducers. Divide output voltage by input voltage, them multiple the max output current by that number and double it. Then install the next higher Off-the-Shelf fuse size. IE: 12V / 48V = 0.25 0.25 X 25A = 6.25A 6.25A X 2 = 12.5A Next higher standard fuse = 15A I'd probably go with a 15A Slo-Blo, or maybe a 20A Fast-Blo. |

Re: 48 volt inverter installation
I've been using it for decades when specifying the input fuse for a transformer or power supply.
(Or guessing what a blown fuse ought to be if it is unmarked and can't find any specs on the circuit) Oops there was a typo. "bay" should be "by". I corrected it. |

Re: 48 volt inverter installation
Thank you everyone for your replies to my inverter post. I now have a clue on what to do. It is very hard to get info here in Canada.
Thanks again, BJ |

Sorry I missed the
You said it's hard to get info in Canada. I hope you only mean next door? But I would hope you could find that too. You might be the next be thing in your local area. |
