New to forum - need G1 advice
Hi Guys,
I am new to this forum and new to the Yamaha G1. Heck I'm new to golf carts altogether. I am not a golfer but have wanted a golf cart to use on my acreage for a long time and ran across a 1983 G1 for $300. Cart is in great shape and runs great. Of course like any good man with a new toy I immediatly started looking for ways to modify it. Looked at lift kits all over the internet and then on a whim I decided to call the local Yamaha dealer. As luck would have it he had a Jake's lift kit for the G1 that he had for a long time. He let me have it for $250!! I about fainted! I grabbed that thing and ran out the door before he changed his mind! I was figuring all I could afford would be one of those 4" $219 dollar lift kits. I guess a guy gets lucky every once in awhile. I am now working on installing the lift kit. So far so good. Here's where I have a couple questions for you guys who know what they are doing with these things. I took the front cowling off to make installing the lift kit easier and to allow me to get a good look at the front end. First question is about the steering box. The steering is a little loose. Since I have never had one of these things I am not sure how much play there should be in the steering wheel. There is about 2-3" of play in the wheel. Is this normal? The play appears to be in the steering gear box itself - is there a way to adjust the gear box like there is on a car? Second question is about the use of the stock wheels and tires with the lift kit. The instructions with the Jake lift kit state that you cannot use the stock wheels and tires. I Have one side of the front lift kit installed and I put the stock wheel back on and it looks like it would work fine. What am I missing? Why can't I use the stock stuff until I can afford some 10" rims and 22 " tires? Any help and advice is very much appreicated!! Thanks! Steve |

Re: New to forum - need G1 advice
Hi, I can't help you with any of the technical stuff (I leave that to the hubby and the guys here) but wanted to welcome you to BGW and to the Yamaha G1 world.
All I can tell you is that my G1 has hardly any play in the steering, hubby's G1 has some but not much. LoL..but that is as technical with these things as I get! Have fun with your new toy! |

Re: New to forum - need G1 advice
Thanks for reply Wannabe!
From your reply I'm guessing that my steerring play is not normal. I have a lot to learn about these G1's but from everything I've been reading on the forum it seems like I have myself a good solid cart! My 13 year old son thinks its the best thing since girls! Steve |

Re: New to forum - need G1 advice
The steeering play has an adjustment on the top of the steering box, should be a bolt with an allen head held in place by a washer and hex nut. Loosen the nut and turn bolt in clockwise to take out sufficient (not too tight!) play and re-tighten nut. I have also heard that simply repacking the box full with grease can help a lot. Just be careful with the seal so you can re-use.
As far as stock wheels with the lift I guess it could make the cart top heavy and be a safety concern, but that's just a guess. |

Re: New to forum - need G1 advice
The tie rod riser should hit the inside of an 8" rim. You should need 10" rims of clearance inside.

Re: New to forum - need G1 advice
ez, just a note: Make sure once adjusted that there is no binding, stop to stop. Helps to have the front end on jacks. If there is loosen slightly till it's gone. There will always be some "play" in the steering, that's normal.
Ron makes a good point, might check while you have the front end up! |

Re: New to forum - need G1 advice
thanks for welcome Dock98!
Hi Newguy - thanks for the info. I have completed the install of the lift kit for th drivers side front and I put the stock tire on. No interference that I can find yet but I haven't set the cart down off the jacks yet. I'm already looking for some 10" wheels but it may be a bit before I can afford new rims and tires. Flintrock - went out and found the adjustment you told me about and I was able to tighten up the steering nicely. It's a whole lot better than it was! Thank you! Again, thank you all very much for the help! I sincerely appreciate it! Steve |

Re: New to forum - need G1 advice
Well I finished up the install of the 6" Jakes lift on my G1 yesterday.
That clutch bolt/frame interferenice thing dang near drove me nuts. I could not for the life of me figure out how to indent that frame to clear the clutch bolt head. There was simply not enough room to get a hammer to swing in there. I tried heating it and beating it but just couldn't get anywhere. I even called Glen at Jake's Carts to ask how they did it. He sais 'we just heat it up and beat it with a hammer". I asked him if they dropped the swing arm or how they got in there to swing a hammer. He said they didn't take anything off. Not much help. No way to get a grinder in there that I could figure either so after staring at it for a hour I got my Dremel and some cutting wheels and notched out the frame to clear the clutch bolt. I only took enough out to clear the bolt but am concerned about weakening the fram. I'll probably weld in a piece of angle iron on the opposite side of the frame from where the notch is. I also had to lengthen the fuel line from the bottom of the filter to the steel line on the frame. Looks like the tube that runs from the oil tank to the differential (is this a breather of some sort) is a little short but I thin kI am going to start mixing gas/oil directly. Can someone tell me the proper ratio? is 50:1 OK on these engines? I put the stock wheels back on the cart until I can afford some 10" rims and 22" tires. I drove the cart down the road and back last night and checked for any interference with the stock wheels and the lift kit. I cannot see any issues at all. Everything works fine and nothing rubs. Still not sure why Jake's instructions say DO NOT USE STOCK WHEELS All in all the lift kit installation took a lot longer than I thought it would but well worth the effort. And it gave me a chance to get the know the cart better! Can't wait to get some 22" tires on this thing. Steve |
