I think the magnetic break out solenoids have polarity.
Also, the polarity comes from the battery connections and is followed by the diode.

His comments were in reference to the MZJ type solenoid he had in his post which does not have any built in polarity.

The Solenoid You have on your picture does not have magnetic blowouts, the + on the side is because there is a diode soldered from factory between the terminals.

That OEM Solenoid is the reason some early Club Car wiring diagrams did not show a diode on the solenoid which some folks erroneously interpreted as not being needed.

You should always have a diode when the Solenoid coil is being activated by an electronic device.

The Solenoids with the Magnetic Blowout like the SW180 in CartsUnlimited drawing will have the + on the Top near when of the big posts to indicate where the highest voltage potential cable is connected.

If not cabled correctly instead of "blowing" the arc out of the contact area when they open, the Solenoid will actually drive the arc inside which can cause premature damage of the contacts surface.

It was just the way it was worded.
That little diode is hard to see.
After cleaning off the crud on my OEM solenoid there is a little diode on it.
So, like the magnetic blowout design it's not the solenoid contacts or the activation coil that have polarity.
Having a diode soldered on it or a magnetic blowout circuit determines the polarity of the assembly.

My pic is the 2017 Onward OEM solenoid. Similar to your pic, but not exactly. I cannot find a small diode between the two small terminals nor a "+" stamped into the solenoid. I am installing an Alltrax 48-400 contoller and need to know if I should install the diode included with the controller on the larger terminals after removing the resistor currently installed. Also, does this solenoid need another diode installed between the two smaller terminals or does this solenoid have an internal diode.

I installed the 400 amp Alltrax controller a few months ago. Initially the cart ran fine. As time has gone on when I first start out in my cart it will run full speed then slow down to a speed slower than stock, then surge to a fast speed and slow again. Very erratic speed surges. But as I play golf and start and stop the cart will run normal with no surges. Almost like it has to "warm up" or something. Why is this happening ? I don't think I have a diode on the big contacts only the small ones. Does this sound like a diode problem?

I was wondering this same thing with a 2019 onward. Do we not need a smaller diode to connect the smaller posts?

For the Alltrax XCT, You need a diode on both the small terminals AND the Large posts on the solenoid. Both should be included with your kit. Read the Installation instructions and they explain where and how to connect both diodes. They are BOTH Necessary for the XCT controller.

Reviving the Dead: Thanks this was helpful, I have one additional question; slightly related, in that I need a pack separation contactor to protect my lithium with the BMS.

I use a regen protection diode around the main contactor terminals*(Regen Diode) The large posts pass current through them when the energizing coil closes and pulls the contacts up. If the controller was to lose power while the regen circuit was active (which would take a switch/electrical failure or key being turned off), it could damage the controller. That is why it is a must that the striped/banded end of the regen diode be installed on/and facing the same large post as the Main Pack Pos battery cable
If I put a pack disconnect contactors in series with the main contactor, don't I invalidate the protection previously mentioned. In this case, would I put a contactor on the negative side for similar effect?
