Default I need some advice

This probably isn't the right "group", but since I have a Electric cc, will ask anyway. I found a 1981 Harley Davidson gas for sale (for my son), they're asking $500. Now, he says it runs great in reverse but doesn't have full power in forward. He's never had it checked out (he ended up buying a new one). So...could this just be something minor? Or could it be something major and end up costing more than it's worth?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

If it is the older 2 stroke models, the timing may be off.
Those motor if I remember correctly, run backwards for reverse, and the timing can make a big differance.

You remember right. Parts are available but may be pricey.
