2005 CC Precedent Steering Problem
Need some help.
I bought this used last summer. It probably did not have the easiest life for sure, it was used outside on the farm. Nonetheless it worked ok. The batteries were fair, looks ok, and everything seemed to work acceptable. Towards the end of the summer last year, the steering started to get a little funny. When I would back it out of the garage, and people would get on, the steering would act funny for the first few blocks. Then it would be ok. Now by funny here is what I mean. When you are going straight down the road (and it gets worse the faster you go) the cart would dart left and right. It is subtle but noticeable. It is enough to make people's head moved around and question you if you are doing it on purpose. Again, after a few blocks it would be ok?? Wierd. So winter comes. I tear it down to repaint, new batteries, 10" wheels and tires, some other things. I look at the front end. It is a little loose. The spindle bushings do have a little wear, especially the bottom ones. I took everything apart and cleaned and relubed. I put new bolts through the bushings, as the original, fully threaded bolts were worn thin from wear. Using cap bolts actually helped tighten up the front end to what I thought was acceptable. Right now, if I jack up the front of the car, it does have some play. To me, and I am somewhat of a decent mechanic, it's not a lot. I even had an Engineering manager from CC Georgia come look at it. He said it is a little worn but nothing to get worried about. Now this spring the steering is awful. At full speed it's like it has a mind of it own. You and the passengers are shaky all over the place while you are trying to keep it straight. When I turn the steering wheel (stationary) it seems like the steering is tight. In other words, there is very little to no slop in the steering response. The rack seems tight?? I have it set at a little toe-in right now. I wish the camber was adjustable, because to me it seems like it has a slight camber issue. In other words, the outside 2/3rds of the new tires appear to be getting the wear. You can almost see the wheels steer on there own when you are going straight down the road. Yet, when I turn the wheel at a stop the wheels respond tightly and instantly, with no play?? Sounds like a bent spindle to me. Your toe adjustment may be set correctly while sitting still with both tires pointing straight, but when you steer the alignment changes because one spindle steers "quicker" than the other because it's bent. It's all a matter of simple geometry.

What do I look for in a bent spindle? And the problem is not when I steer, but rather going straight down the road? It's like it randomly veers right or left although I am making no steering wheel movements.
And yes, the tie rod ends have a little play. But man, it's not a lot. Especially considering how uncontrollably it is veering everywhere. Let me know on the spindle, and I'll check it out. What components should I start replacing or tightening up first? I can't keep dumping a ton of money into this, so I need to spend and repair wisely. Thanks guys |

A bent spindle is very hard to identify on a Precedent. I have barely ever seen one that was visibly bent. I always tell the cart staff at the local courses that if they have front end damage please don't mess with it and try to fix it. A bent spindle is easily identifiable this way because you'll be able to turn the steering wheel perfectly straight and see which tire is kicked outward or inward, depending on the nature of the bend. The best bet for you is to even out your tie rod ends based on thread count. After that, bring them in evenly until desired toe setting is reached. After this is completed, usually the bent spindle will oversteer in one direction and you'll have a tire rub on the affected side.
