Is a Portable Windshield "Street Legal"
New to the forum. Looks like some great info available here. I looked through past threads but didn't find my answer. Does anyone know if a portable windshield would pass an inspection to make a cart street legal. my brother-in-law bought an 85 e-z-go and had everything done to it to make it street legal except the windshield. they tried 3 different ones and couldn't get it to mount because the cart doesn't have the original top on it. i just bought a 2000 e-z-go 3 days ago as well. mine is street legal and already has a title. here is mine.

Re: Is a Portable Windshield "Street Legal"
Short answer: No, it is not street legal.
That is because it is not DOT rated. However that does not mean that it would not pass inspection for a street legal vehicle. The issue is that they do not always know what they are looking at or for. |

I have a DOT piece of glass mounted in a frame thats bolted on my cart. Where I live they have a cop that inspects your cart before they issue you a nev sticker. The one you have wouldn't pass.

I see you are in Illinois. Does your cart have state tags, or are we talking local ordibance?

No, Just a local ordinance. We have to have headlights, brakelights, turn signals, horn, dot windshield, rearview mirror, seatbelts, and SMV triangle. Im only allowed on 35mph or less streets, nd have only certain places that I can cross state road.

That's what I figured. I tried the state plate routine last year and was thwarted by a lack of a 17-digit VIN. Just wanted to make sure nothing changed on the state level.

Re: Is a Portable Windshield "Street Legal"
thanks for the replies so far. he can buy a piece of lexan/polycarbonate and bolt it to the struts but he has another issue. he bought an enclosed trailer that the door height is 5'3" and the golf cart height is 5'8". he plans to modify the struts so that they can lift off in the middle so he can store his cart in the trailer. if he bolts a windshield on, he have to unbolt it each time. he's wanting to put one of those vinyl windshields that velcro on. one police department said it would pass, another said no it had to be glass or safety glass. here is the plastic one he is thinking about...

Re: Is a Portable Windshield "Street Legal"
I am in CA. and have a CHP that lives next door. His partner is the guy the puts VIN numbers on vehicles. He is going to come by and assign a VIN for my cart. I will also plan on a backup and license plate light as part of the license issue. Technically you can not make a golf cart to a "NEV" (in CA) but have to meet other vehicle safety laws.
