timing belt
i just got a what i believe is a 94 ezgo. this thing is a basket case. it came with 2 engines but no engine in it. i got it for free though so even if i cant get it to run i am at no loss. i started working on one of the engines that was more complete the other one is completely tore down. i started looking it over and checking for compression and stuff and found that the timing belt was snapped. first off i was wondering who sold the clutch pullers for these things or if i can make one. second i was wondering if there should be any concern that the belt has snapped or could it be just from old age. thanks guys sorry so long.

Re: timing belt
The belt does break from old age. You may get lucky there and have a good engine that just needs a belt. You could make your own puller from a rather long fine thread 3/4 bolt... google around and find a pic of the puller. I could give some dimensions if needed from mine. When you put that replacement timing belt on the key way in the lower pulley and the dot or hole on the top pulley go at the 12 O'clock position.

Re: timing belt
is there a chance that these pistons could be junk because they hit the valves. i have looked everything over by removing the valve cover and it all looks ok. just haven't pulled the head to look at the pistons. i was also wondering what the compression should be per cylinder.

Re: timing belt
The valves do not reach the pistons. I have replaced he belts and never had engine damage. One even broke doing 25mph. The compression should between 145 and 165 psi, you can check this only if you have the valves closed.... lemme know if you get a belt and I can walk you thru the belt tensioner install.

You mentioned you got 2 engines? If there are no cracks on the engine block and cylinder head, I am willing to consider buying it. Name your price and if I find it reasonable for a non-working engine, I will buy it. |

Re: timing belt
before i have my timing belt i did a leak down test on this engine. it 30% on cylinder 2 but none on cylinder 1. and i made sure that the valves were shut it seemed like all of the air was leaking right past the rings and out the breather tube. so i pulled the engine apart today to rebuild it and i came across a few questions. i was wondering if all that held the rocker arm pin in was that little brass plug. should i be able to spin the came over quit easily. i know they are small springs but it seems like very little tension there is some just not a lot. and i took the oil pump cover off realized i didn't need to and so i put it back on and it seems to have a slight bulge in the cover something to worry about or normal not sure. thanks for the help guys sorry so many questions just want it right the first time.
