How to add brake lights to a precedent
I have a 2006 precedent, all stock. The cart has a basic headlite and tail lite kit installed on it.
I want to add brake lites to this cart. The wiring harness has 3 wires going to the tail lites. Since I am only adding brake lites, nothing else to this cart, can someone tell me what I need, and how to do it? I have seen these cheap "brake pads" with 2 wires hanging out of them, and I have seen brake pedals with a horn type button , drilled and mounted to the brake pad so when you step on the brakes, your foot presses the button down. Is all I need, this button?? Run a hot to one side of the button, and a switch leg from other side of button, spliced into one of the 3 wires in the tail lite harness? |

Re: How to add brake lights to a precedent
A 2006 Precedent is Pre-Wired for lights. The wiring should be under the floormat. Probably wadded up and zip tied next to the MCOR. All you'd have to do is install a factory or aftermarket brake light switch and connect it to these wires. You'll also have to install a 48 volt relay in the dash right next to the reverse buzzer. Wiring should be there for that too.

Re: How to add brake lights to a precedent
David
I have seen the 2 wires by the mcor. If I remember right, I have also seen 4 wires under the panel. These 4 wires go to a relay? On this particular cart, whoever installed the lite kit, hacked all kinds of wires under the panel, so I am not sure if the 4 wires are still there. If they are still there ( 4 wires), do you know which colors go to where on a relay? Thanks so much for answering me. |

Re: How to add brake lights to a precedent
It's hard to answer that question because there are so many manufacturers for light kits and they all use different color wires. Essentially what you're trying to do is turn the relay on with the key. The COM post would have a 12V positive wire and the NO post would run down to the brake light switch.

Re: How to add brake lights to a precedent
David, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I've been searching for this answer for weeks. I recently bought a 2006 Precedent and it had basic lights. I added turn signals and had to replace the RR light assembly. Everything worked fine but the brake lights. I'd been poring over the shop schematics and was searching high and low for the relay. Your post got me to take off the dash - again - and right by the buzzer was the mount for the relay. No relay, just the mount. Unfortunately, all of the connectors except for the orange wire, are on blue wires. Fortunately, tracing them back to the connector I can determine which wires correspond to the factory schematic. Unfortunately, the schematics don't identify the connectors on the relay. The two wires to the relay activation coil are connected with a diode. The coil is just a wire, so does the polarity matter? I'm thinking it doesn't because the coil doesn't really know positive from negative. Am I right?

Re: How to add brake lights to a precedent
With a diode connected across the coil of a relay polarity does matter. The positive needs to be connected to the cathode side of the diode. The cathode side is the side with the band on it. Just like the solenoid.

Re: How to add brake lights to a precedent
Sorry, I should have been more precise. The diode is hard wired into the harness, across the power and return lines for relay activation. I guess it's there to suppress spikes from the coil when you turn off the power. My real question is, as the diode is present on the wiring harness, it shouldn't matter to the relay coil which side is connected to power. Or am I wrong again? It's been 35 years since I worked in electronics, and my mind isn't the steel trap it used to be. That's why I couldn't quite figure out the schematics until I read your post. I also figure that, at least for testing purposes, I can connect the 12v line and the switch line under the dash together and make sure the brake switch works.

Re: How to add brake lights to a precedent
P.S. Just adding a pressure switch to the face of the brake pedal. no timer either.
