Batteries spark after being hooked up incorrectly
Similar to what was mentioned in another thread, I just purchased a set of 6 new Trojan batteries and installed them. One of them was rocking on something (accumulation of dirt & old battery residue) so I pulled it back out, cleaned the rails underneath and put it back in backwards. I hooked everything up and as I was attaching battery #1's positive lead, it arced. Realizing my error, I replaced the battery that was backwards and while attempting to reconnect, it arced again. As far as I know, everything is correctly hooked up now.
What have I done? I am sick at the thought I seriously damaged my cart.... I know very little about the electrical/mechanical workings of this cart and could use a little guidance... Thanks! |

Re: Batteries spark after being hooked up incorrectly
IT is common for the batteries to arc when connectiong the last one up. On a side note if it is arcing enough to weld the cable to teh battery you have something wrong, but it you get a slight arc when connecting them, than that is ok.

I've had the same thing happen with batteries on carts.

small little spark does not harm anyone. HUGE and noisy spark, something's wrong.

Re: Batteries spark after being hooked up incorrectly
The spark indicates there is a draw present.... The size of the spark can be minimal to melting. I prefer none ...

Re: Batteries spark after being hooked up incorrectly
Thank you all...I figured it out. Last year I replaced the hot wire coming from the solenoid to the battery and didn't label it. (I know...stupid). In installing new batteries, I inadverdently swapped the wires from the top of the controller (neg) and from the solenoid (+). Long story short, switched them and now the cart is back in service.
Thank you all for your speedy help. I appreciate it! Scott |

Re: Batteries spark after being hooked up incorrectly
I am lucky (and somewhat of a dipstick)...I thought that I probably fried something......but fortunately my ezgo is still going...
It seems only fair that the golf cart gods are more forgiving than the golf gods... |
