Default Stupid question ?

Will a 12 volt battery allow my 48volt cart to move? How many volts does it take to make the motor roll over? I was thinking about using 4 12volt law tractor battery's wires in series as a back up battery source. To get me out of the woods if the batteries die on me. This may sound weird but would this work? At first I was just thinking of 12v deep cycle, but then I was thinking its a 48v system. Any comments?

If you died and depended on the backup batteries, how far would you have to travel?

Not positive but I don't think lawn tractor batteries could do that. I would get 4 12v deep cycle marine batteries.

. . . 12 volts will "roll over" the motor, but won't provide enough ooomph to move the cart . . . invest in a digital volt meter for your dash to monitor your battery pack and eliminate the guess work/risk of getting stuck with dead batteries . . . ScottyB sells a nice one . . .

I agree with Steve. Get a volt meter and take the guess work out of it.
I use my cart for hunting. When the meter gets below 49 volts, it's time to head for camp and plug back in. If I get under 48.5 volts it will still get me back, but you shouldn't let it get that low before charging it up.
BTW, if I'm at the far end of my lease, I am about a mile from camp....
Best wishes!

I agree to go with an on board voltmeter. Scottyb sells one that is excellent.

BTW, there are no stupid questions; if it weren't for questions, BGW wouldn't exist!

Yes Xtra batteries (where ever you put them) would work just fine, 48 is 48 now your setup Ge 500amp controller, plum quick executioner motor this setup just might eat them up and poop them out before the 1 mile.

someone else can do the math

Yeah I was just thinking if those small batteries would work. They would total 48volts, but how far will they really get me. I was going to mount them on a board and put them in the bag well with a set of leads running to the main terminals with caps on them. So I would just have to clamp them on for a back up source. They wouldn't take up any room at all.
