Default Carryall Turf 2 power issues

Hey Guys

We purchased 3 Carryall Turf 2's from Club Car's used fleet program. These carts are 2003's and were in need of some TLC. We are just in the process of rebuilding one at this time. We have re done all the brakes, all the front bushings, tie rod ends, steering u joints, the hood is being prepped for paint and the new upholstery is going on shortly, it will be a very nice cart. Now to the questions

We are having an issue when we get into rougher terrain and minor hills the cart tends to slow down quite a lot, when we get back on pavement it is happy to go again. Is this normal?

1. What are the top speeds of these carts.
2. The batteries are 1 year old, we have fully charged them and done a load test on each, they all check out great, as any 1 yr old battery pack should. When fully charged we are getting 50.2 volts on the voltmeter.
3. We hooked up the voltmeter put it on the seat so we could get some readings. On the flat pavement when we are full out we are seeing 47.7volts, when we start getting into the rougher stuff we are seeing 46.9volts and then in climbs we are seeing as low as 45.9volts, then back on pavement we are at 47.7volts.

Is this normal? This cart is going to be used in moderately hilly terrain so we need to know if this is a normal condition. Compared to the Precedents these carryall's are slugs.

Any help would be appreciated!

Well, a Carryall Turf II should be running 15mph, as shown in the data below, from the Factory Service Manual.

Your battery numbers sound strange. Your pack voltage at full charge is around 85%, not too bad for 1 yr old. But when you head into the rough stuff, you are dropping to less than 30%.

Are you checking your full pack voltage as it's being charged? Or are you waiting before taking the "full" reading? How long?

If you're doing the above readings correctly, it sounds like your batteries have sulfated,
such that when demand on the pack increases, voltage falls away rapidly.

Improving the speed of a Carryall is easy, just add larger tires. It's effectively the same thing as changing the gearing. But with that change comes a tradeoff. If you gear for more speed, you'll find less torque; unfortunately for you, torque is what you need to climb a hill.

Thanks for the response, we charged the battery pack over night and then check the voltage reading a couple hours after and the information we provided was based on that. Your idea of the batteries having sulphate may be a good one. We will try a low amp and low volt charge on the batteries and see if we can break down the sulphate. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated!

They are Trojan T-875 295 amp/hr 20/hr 170

Yes they do seem to be recovering, we are doing another charge on them right now. These carts came from a very strictly maintained fleet, and the water level was perfect on them, which is better then I can say for a lot of these fleet returned machines that we deal with!

Thanks for your input, always appreciated!

Hey Guys

Just checked the battery pack this morning. We ran the charger last night and unplugged it before heading home, after sitting all night the reading was 50.1 volts. So it seems fairly stable. We load tested each battery once again this morning and they all test out good. So we will try another "road" test and see what we get for performance.

Anything else we should be looking at? controller? solenoid? F/R switch? We don't deal with these older carts often, so any input would be great!

Ok we just hooked up the voltmeter and it read 50.6 volts, backed it out of the shop, as we were backing out it was reading 49.9 volts. Went down our paved taxi way at full pedal depressed it was reading 47.7volts, got into the cabbage and a bit rougher terrain and it was reading 46.9 volts, went up some very small hills with cabbage and it was reading 45.7 volts and then back down the taxi way and it was reading 47.7 volts, parked it and reading 49.9 volts.

Do you think the batteries are the issue?

Ok so here is what we have done so far. Swapped chargers and charged the cart again, let it sit for about 30 mins and took a reading, voltage is now 53.2v. Checked each battery with a Hyrdrometer. We have 2 different batteries with one cell in each that read fair and I have one different battery with one cell that reads bad.

Also took that cart out on level pavement with GPS in hand and we are only get a top speed of 16 kilometers an hour.

Do you guys think that one bad cell could be the issue? Seems hard to believe. But then again we are not the battery electronic guys, we are the custom fabrication make the cart look good guys

yes one bad cell means a bad battery......the S/G reading should be as close to each other as possible.....say you have a battery with one cell at 12.75 and 2 cells at 12.25 even though the #,s are good just the fact they are different can be an issue and if you have a cell reading bad than at the least that battery has to go...................................
