Default Burning up solenoid on separate 12 volt aux system

Installed separate 12volt deep cycle marine battery to power stereo, lights, etc. Initially we put in a lawn tractor solenoid run to the toggle switch and the only item pulling juice was the stereo. The solenoid burned up in 30 minutes. Replaced with a car solenoid and it lasted a half day, got hot and burned up. I plan to power the stereo and telephone charger plug thru this system and we installed a single phase on board charger. Shouldnt a car solenoid handle this or might we have a wiring issue. Just guessing and would love any advice here. Have to have my tunes. Any suggestions.

Are you sure you are sending only 12vdc to the solenoid primary? If you sre sending pack voltage to the primary it will burn up in short order.

Yes. We had the pack running and tested before we installed the separate tray, battery, solenoid and toggle switch. Then we added the on board charger and the stereo and outlet plug. That is why i am puzzled. My other thought was maybe the ground wire isnt strong enough. Any other thoughts.

The lawn mower and automotive (ford style) solenoids are of the same design.
They are designed to engage a starter, start a motor and then turn off.
Continious duty solenoids or relays are designed to stay on by being larger and with more internal windings to run cooler and draw less amps to operate.
You can get a continious duty solenoid like the ones gas 12V carts use and run a fuse bar for your accessories or use a bank of controlable relays for each individual accessory.

That sounds reasonable and rational. I did not know there were different solenoids for different uses. i thought they were all starter and just had different amp levels to handle when closing a circuit. I will check on this today and see what happens.
thanks again

I don't know how much power you are drawing but you can use an ignition activated relay/solenoid that is continuous duty 30amps for $4.

It is the same specs as ClubCar uses, about 1 1/4" square and looks like this:

Just out of sheer morbid curiosity.... Why would you install a solenoid in a stand alone 12V application? What am I missing here?

The only reason I could think of is to turn it off and on with the ignition switch.
