Default Back firing harley cart

I HAVE a 1973 harley golf cart was running good but back fired now no power??i have change the points and condensor same thing will run good then back fires

First check if the engine runs better with the muffler disconnected If so you might want to look at pages 3 and 4 of my 1982 harley thread which I have bumped.

Below is a link to a Par Car service manual. On page 6 there is a section on back fire prevention. Even though this was written for a Par Car, the described method applies to Harleys as well.

I am going to write a sticky about this one as well. Look for that shortly.

Lastly, check out the "timing" sticky at the top of the forum. Bad timing is a huge cause for backfires.
