Default 1985 club car transaxle oil overflow question

What is the purpose of the brass bolt on top of the axle that has a hole drilled through it? I added some gear lube to the transaxle and the oil is leaking out through that bolt. Is it an overflow device or what?

Sounds as though you overfilled the rear end with oil. The purpose of the holed bolt is to vent the case so as to not allow pressure to build when the oil gets heated from use; otherwise the case pressure can cause the oil to leak past the seals and perhaps find its way into your brakes.

If you simply added without checking your level your best option is to completely drain and start over.... Be sure to not only add the correct quantity or oil but the correct quality of oil.... IE not all rear ends called for "gear" oil some simply used a straight weight motor oil while others spec for an actual gear oil. Inter mixing of the two could cause foaming which could cause leakage too...

Thanks teecro. That is most likely what I did. I didn't know that the capacity was 22 ounces so I "filled it up". Looks like draining it and doing it right is the solution I needed.
