Rings
Hello I have an 85 gasser which makes some noise. I had it looked at and was told the rings are shot and the piston is slapping.I am going to replace the piston and rings. My question is should I get the kit that comes with a new head or just the piston and ring set? I am leaning towards the new head because with the piston slapping there is probably some scoring/damage,and it sounds like a no brainer, but just want to get another opinion or 2. Thanks Bill

I think it's safe to say you won't know till you peel it apart.

Re: Rings
Thanks csason-that makes sense. Am i seeing this right that the easiest way to do this would be to pull the whole engine out? Or can i do it right on the cart? Thanks again for your help. Bill

Re: Rings
Top end kits are pretty cheap. If there's visible damage, I'd go for the top end with piston, rings, cylinder and all the trimmings

Re: Rings
Well... I personally would take it out of the cart..
Several reasons. One, you are going to want to clean everything you work with to the bone. Second, you are going to have to use a torque wrench if you do it correctly, and you won't be able to visualize your work area properly,.. WAIT A SEC.. There are forty eight reasons to take it out, and I can't think of any reason to leave it in the cart.. Let's put it this way, if you leave it in the cart, it will be like doing heart surgery through your throat...instead of opening the chest. I'd take it out. |

Re: Rings
I suggest a nice big table to put everything on.. The book (available in the tech section) for the EZ go rebuild is very specific about making sure you keep everything in order..like when you tear the top end down, put each rocker arm, spacer, and spring back on the shaft in order.. etc.
My pet peeve is cleanliness.. an engine should be so clean you could lick each part.. I am serious..each threaded surface male and female needs to be thoroughly cleaned etc.. Then it's a much nicer rebuild and much easier to complete. Then when you start your reassemble, use good clean oil as you go.. I look forward to your pics of running cart ! |
