Lifted G2 gas cart - lifted gearing
I am new to the forum and new to the golf cart world so any advice would be appreciated. I just picked up an '89 Yamaha G2 cart from an elderly lady in town. She was the original owner and used it for the local golf course. I have bought a Jakes 6" lift and 22x10x10 tire package. After driving the cart a little around the block (street legal) it does around 26mph (prior to installing the lift/tires). I looked through the paper work and it appears she order the cart with "high speed gears".
Anyway, I am concerned this gear set up will be a little weak with the larger tires. We plan on using the cart for camping in the desert, and driving to the lake from the campground. Some of the area have a mild hill or two. I was also interested in towing a 12' aluminum boat and trailer (apx 150 pounds). I am not interested in spending thousands (big blocks) and would like to maintain some top end. Therefore I was thinking of installing an original set of gears (12-1) or the "power package - clutch kit. Do any of you think the power clutch kit will provide the torque I am looking for, or will I need to re-gear the transmission? Thanks, Tom |

Welcome to the forum Tom. I agree with Ron on the torque kit. It is the best thing you can ever do to a stock Yamaha period.

Re: Lifted G2 gas cart - lifted gearing
Thanks for the ideas, that is what I was planning on doing and if that didn't work I planned on changing the gears. Are there any drawbacks to this system? What does this power system do to makie more torque?

It puts more tention on the driven clutch keeping the drive belt riding high.

Re: Lifted G2 gas cart - lifted gearing
Took the cart out this weekend to get a "base line" before doing all of the upgrades and the cart does 27/28 mph based on GPS. I guess the high speed gears really do increase it's speed. I figure it might increase a little once I install the oversized tires. I took everyones advice and ordered the Power Pack from Cart Parts Plus so that I will get the extra torque.

Here are a couple of pics.. but keep in mind it is a project. Wheels in second picture are just setting next to the cart to see what it will look like. I bought the cart off a 93 year old lady in Sun City. She was the original owner and kept it in her garage. My son and I removed the cloth seat covers, rear window and bag holder.

Cart looks great. It appears to be well cared for and unused.
