not turning over once warmed up
My 82 gas HD starts fine cold, and will drive for ever as long as you don't stop. After about 2 min driving, if stopped, it will not turn over in reverse but still will in forward but after driving another 2 min it will not in forward either, have to wait about 5 min & it is fine again, the forward/reverse switch is the style that uses the key - -any ideas

scored piston, you can pull the exhaust off and take a look at the rings.

Re: not turning over once warmed up
Take a look at my post. I have pictures of piston and rings missing- low compression. Mine had some of the same issues. I would be driving and it would just stop and I would have to wait awhile before It would move again. I am not expert and this is my first rebuild of a motor so this is just a FYI.

Re: not turning over once warmed up
it never dies, if i stop fully, then the electric starter will not turn the eng over, in reverse first ( after driving 2-3 min)then after a little more driving it won't turn over in forward either (also after fully stopping), i was thinking a solenoid or switch or something - - -what i end up doing is if i get behind someone I just keep the eng at such a low rpm that the belt is just slipping but I'm sure that can't be great for the belt or the motor

Re: not turning over once warmed up
Do a quick compression test 90 to 100 you are fine or shake the exhaust pipe is you have something rattling it is most likely your old rings. If that checks out it might be a crank seal. Good luck
