Default 05 cc ds axle question

I have a 05 DS Gas and I am slapping in a 23hp motor. I understand that my reverse now becomes my forward. I want to change out the 17:1 gears for 8:1 gears. I have never done this and not sure what parts to buy because I don't know what I have for an axle. My google abilities must be slipping. Anybody done this on here?

I have done it. It isn't too terrible of a job, you have to be patient and need a press. Unlike automotive differentials there is no need to "set up" the gears, they are drop in deal.

Why the 8:1???
With a 23hp the 6:1 is so much better, all the way around, plenty of grunt to get up the steepest hills, and enough power the cruise the roads....

I had the 8:1 and switch to the 6:1, so much happier.....

The 23 I have is a hoss of a motor!!!
Installing those gears takes less than an hour...... It is easier then people make it out to be..... You do need to press though...

If you put 8:1 gears in, your ratio won't be 8:1, it will be closer to 12:1.

I put 6:1 in mine and my "forward" is just around 9:1

I have a 2004 CC Ds gas and put the VC625 in it and I emailed and asked which gear I should go with and VC suggested the 8 to 1,,,,,they did not explain why over the 6 to 1.

so I am a little confused as to which one to go with also.

This is actually a pretty easy decision. If you are using a CC unitized rear end with a CCW engine and reverse is now forward, what do you want your "forward" ratio to be - 12:1 or 9:1?

If you want 12:1 then use the 8:1 gears, if you want 9:1 then use the 6:1 gears.

IIRC, Rooster59 has the VC625 and 8:1 gears and says he still has plenty of torque. Maybe contact him for advice to see which route you'd rather go.
