1988 ParCar 5K DX4 wiring diagram
Hello all. I'm new to this forum and apologize in advance for my ignorance. I have recently purchased a 1988 5k (DX4) 2 Cycle Gas golf cart that someone may have miss-wired. It's sort of an odd ball be that it has 5 solenoids instead of 1. It uses the newer 3 position Forward, Off, Reverse ignition switch instead of the old standard on the floor forward reverse. I can find every schematic under the sun, but mine. I called one parts supplier and sure enough was told that the 1988 is an oddball, but hasn't sent me a schematic. This is not a jury rigged attempt by someone trying to turn an electric cart into a 2 cycle gas. It is however, what looks like an engineers attempt to replace the heavy duty old faithful Harley selector switch with a bunch of solenoids and a more complicated ignition switch. I have found the schematic for the ignition switch and its position, but that's all I've found. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: 1988 ParCar 5K DX4 wiring diagram
This is the service manual for an '89:
http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/colum..._1989_GSEL.pdf I am not positive but I am pretty sure that '88 and '89 had the same set up. There is a wiring diagram in there that shows 5 solenoids so I think it's right. |

That will give you an idea of what's going on with that setup. The link Lochlin posted should have the 5 solenoid system in it. Can you post a pic of the keyswitch? What kind of problem are you having out of it? |

Re: 1988 ParCar 5K DX4 wiring diagram
The schematic is helpful. It unfortunately doesn't show the wires going from the switch to the components. Just a path called the wiring harness. It gives some color codes and terminal numbers, but someone has been messing with wires/colors on this machine. The switch on mine has the harness individual wire hook up instead of the one piece plug. I'll try to get a pic later today if I get off work early enough to do a continuity test on the switch. Thank you both for the help you have given thus far.

Re: 1988 ParCar 5K DX4 wiring diagram
Oh, forgot to answer your question. The back-up buzzer never shuts off and the starter doesn't get power. After seeing the switch continuity test diagrams, I'm positive almost all the wires going to the switch are in the wrong place. I want to make sure it's wired right before I install a new switch if the old one Fails the continuity test. I don't want to bake a new one. Is there a cheaper generic ignition switch? Those things are over $100 from what I've seen so far. Maybe I've looked in the wrong place?

Re: 1988 ParCar 5K DX4 wiring diagram
Page 87 of that manual shows specifically where the wires go from the key switch. It is odd that that same information isn't in the actual wiring diagram.
Unfortunately, those key switches are what they are regarding price. The cheapest I have seen is right around $80. If you do a thorough search you'll get one for under $100 but those buggers are expensive. |

Re: 1988 ParCar 5K DX4 wiring diagram
Without actually looking at your switch and knowing how its wired I can't say for sure but you should be able to wire in a regular keyswitch and a toggle switch and ditch the high dollar directional switch.
The keyswitch would be wired up to activate the starter solenoid only. Wired up on "accessory" not "cranking" if you use an automotive switch. The toggle switch would have to have 2 "on" positions such as a 3 position toggle switch (on/off/on). One "on" for forwards and one "on" for reverse. The "off" will cut power to the forwards and reverse circuit. So basically your selecting which way you want to go by flipping the toggle switch and sending power to the forwards (or reverse) solenoids (shown as the yellow circuit on the left of the keyswitch) as shown here: http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/attac...tercircuit.gif 2 solenoids are activated in forwards and 2 are activated in reverse so keep in mind the solenoids will likely pull some amps through the toggle switch but I have no idea how much. A 15 amp toggle switch may work or it may take a beefier one. Oh and if you want the reverse buzzer, just wire it up to the toggle switches "reverse" circuit. |

Re: 1988 ParCar 5K DX4 wiring diagram
Just thought of something. If you can measure the resistance of the directional solenoids with a multimeter, you can deduce the amperage pulled by using ohms law. Test by touching the two small terminals on the solenoid. Let me know what it says.

I just picked one of these up myself and am working on getting it running. It apparently ran before getting away a couple of years ago, so if you need any photos I should be able to help.
