Default 1994 36V Marathon Upgrade Question

BGW Forum Members,
I'm about to begin upgrading my 1994 36V EZ-GO Marathon golf cart. I believe I'm the third owner and plan on replacing/upgrading the following:

1. Stock motor (with a MOT-B3 EZ-Go 36 Volt Non-Regen Electric, High Torque).
2. Stock controller (with an AXE4844).
3. Stock solenoid (with 36 Volt Heavy Duty Applications, #124 Series solenoid with silver contacts, 100 amp continuous, 400 amp inrush, OEM # 14808-G1, 27855-G01 )
4. Lift (with a Jake's 4" lift).
5. Wheels/tires (with 10" rims and 22" tires).

I've been searching the forum for a while and I believe these are good upgrades for my intended use. My primary use for the golf cart is hunting on flat ground. If it's capable, I would like to use it in the mountains. Nothing extreme, but some hills from time to time. I'm looking for more torque, not speed.

I'm not an expert with golf carts (this is my first) and any advise is greatly appreciated.

Does this sound reasonable?

My plan is to include pictures/write-ups as I go. I'll be picking up the cart from my lease this weekend. Motor has already been ordered!

I have had work done on the rear axle and new (US2200) batteries/cables installed when I got the cart in Sept. 2012.

Thanks In Advance,
Jdog

Hello Jdog,
Your shopping list looks a bit conservative, small even if you wish to carry more than 2 people or venture into that hilly terrain. I suggest a 500AXE or a minimum 400SPM with 200/800a solenoid minimum. If you stay with 36v use 2g cables, 4g will work okay with these controls on 48v. Replace every high amperage cable in the cart, not just the battery to battery cables.

Anyway, take a look at these suggested items.

I hope this helps.

Scottyb,
Thanks for the input!! I thought about the 500A controller, but wasn't sure I'd get enough out of it to justify the extra expense. I may go that way........

I'll have to check on the cables, they are probably 4g.

A few more questions.
1. I've already ordered it, but what do you think of the motor I plan on using?
2. Any idea how many high amperage cables there are? Is there a kit for upgrading all the cables?
3. And is there a particular order you would recommend doing the upgrades? (i.e. motor, controller, etc. or controller, motor, etc. or solenoid, controller, motor, etc.).

I plan on doing these upgrades over the next few months. I'll save the lift/tires/wheels for last.

Thanks,
Jdog

The MOT 3 motor is a high torque motor. It takes high amperage to make high torque. That is why I suggest a bigger control. If you use a smaller controller the motor will be starved for amperage and can not reach it's potential.
The correct sequence is delivery system upgrade then demand. So in this respect you are right to leave the big tires for last. The cart has 13 high amperage cables total. There are many cable kits available in a wide range of quality and gauges.
If you put this motor on your stock system you may not be overly impressed with the performance. It will get better as you complete the upgrade.

Scottyb,
Can't thank you enough for your input!! So I believe I'm going to proceed this way:
1. Motor
2. AXE 500A controller
3. 200/800a solenoid
4. 2g cables (if mine are not 2g)
5. Lift/wheels/tires

Anything else I should consider?

Thanks Again,
Jdog

48v is a great upgrade in a series cart. It is the biggest bang for the buck.
Consider this the one thing that will pull all this together and make the cart really perform.

Can I make the upgrades discussed here and then convert it from 36V to 48V without losing (or having to replace) any of the upgrades?

Looks like I'll have to start searching what's involved in converting from 36 to 48 volts.

Thanks,
Jdog

Get the Super Duty solenoid. (400A/1000A) it works with anything from 36V to 48V. Otherwise you have to replace the 36V solenoid when you up the battery pack voltage.

The simplest way to upgrade to 48V is replacing the six 6V batteries with six 8V batteries.

If you use 170AH 8V batteries, the run-time will be about the same as a 36V pack made with 225AH 6V batteries.
Using 190AH (or higher) 8V batteries will give you more run-time.

For maximum run-time, use eight 6V batteries and put the two additional batteries in the bag well, or anywhere they will fit.

Thanks JohnnieB!! I got my cart home from our lease yesterday and after cleaning it up a little I started looking at things........... I've got 6G wires (D'oh!!!). Looks like I'll be calling Scottyb for his 2G kit.

Also, I looked at the controller and it's a re-manufactured Curtis PMC (the model , serial, voltage, and current are unreadable) and the motor is an EZGO TEXTRON D-C 60 minute wound series.

My new motor should be here tomorrow, but I have no idea when I'll have time to install it. I may do the 2G wire upgrade first.

Let the fun begin!
