Default How to test a motor part 2

I changed the bearing and cleaned the armature the best I could I used sandpaper but there is still grooves in the armature opposite of the ones machined into. Not sure how those got wore into but there in there. I cleaned everything else and even cleaned the grooves off the brushes. I blew it all off with air compressor. I then tried it and it turns over but it is jerky but is much better then yesterday. What else can I try? Could it be the rear end I have it bolted to? I can try a different rear end. It just doesn't turn over smooth with voltage hooked up. Oh and I used a needle and cleaned the grooves out on the armature also they will full of dust.

Unless you're actually rebuilding the motor fully friend, you may not fully solve the issues.

Take it to a motor repair shop and let them turn the commutator. If there are grooves in it then it needs turning to clean it up. They can also test for shorts and opens.

ok thanks guys!
Maybe I will go with the original plan and add another bandit motor to my collection. I was hoping I was going to get lucky with this motor.
I will ask my machinist at work if it is something he can turn in the lathe here in our shop and if it doesn't work I am not out anything because it doesn't already work!

I would just send it to PQ. They may be able to save it.

Motor shops know how to do this. You have to know what you are doing to properly turn the commuator on a motor without damaging it. Shops that have the right tools can do this for not much $$.

have a local guy that said he can test it with a growler test? which looks for a short in the armature? Then he can usually turn and recut an armature for about $50 so I think I might give it a try. that was just a estimate I am going to stop and see him in the next day or so.

Growler is a tester that looks for internal shorts. It's a good test that has been around since DC motors were invented. It's worth having them work on it and since you already have it apart, they don't have to charge labor to disassemble / assemble the motor. They have the right tools to do this job. You might want to replace the brushes while you are at it - then you will have a "new" motor.
