This is my latest build. Finally able to get ahold of the old school gtx-804 ezgo. Last pic is engine as it is now. Got 18amp charge coil on new engine and did away with starter/generator. I paid $500 for 2 of them and only bought motor, clutch, tires and spray paint. I fabricated everything else. Probably less than ~$1000 into it. Plus time, labor and catching hell from the wife

Okay, I will bite. With the effect COVID has on folks here in PA, the value of golf carts has gone up so that make these "beaters" even more awesome! I would also guess that mean more folks are saving carts that would have otherwise been scrapped.

My cart lives on an island in the middle of the Susquehanna river. With the island being remote it's susceptible to theft and vandalism and that makes me want to keep the investment low. Being on an island also means it's difficult to get to and that means I need a reliable unit because putting a 600+ pound golf cart on my little jon boat is no easy task.

Picked this Yamaha G1 up for $250. A compression test let me know that I needed a topend. I reached out to Don Plowman for a top-end kit, while I was talking to him he upsold me on a muffler and a shaved head.

Put the carb in the ultrasonic cleaner and bolted it all back together. It ran great, pulled about 22 on the flats with the governor in place.

Next I dressed it up a little. I mixed up some brown and white rustoleum and gave it a spray. Then I added a few aluminums bits to hide the rust. Lastly I put a wooden bumper on and called it done.

I have under $1k into it now with the seals and odd bits. It's proven to be reliable and the fastest on the island

Very cool! Was it hard to redo the motor? Rings were ok?

Now tell us about the S10 in the background...350 powered?

2 strokes are cake. I replaced the top-end, that included rings. I grew up with 2 stroke dirt bikes so it was refreshing not messing with valve timing and what not. Last summer, 2 years after I freshened the top-end up, I blew a head gasket. It was a 20 minute job to replace it. I spent much more time sourcing the gasket than installing it.

The S10 is another sign of my sickness, I take on too many projects. Yes, I swapped a 350 in there

I started to document it here but I am slacking, I will update the post eventually. https://www.vwvortex.com/threads/sbc...ocess.8319385/

I found a diamond in the rough DS AQ cart and would absolutely love to grab it and make it sing, but simply don't have the time, so I'm assisting a new member here pick it up and turn it into the diamond that it can. Ah, I wish we could have them all...

This thread deserves a bump.
I bought this Marathon for $500 and converted it to modern TXT48 electronics.
