Battery help please

Hi folks,

I will be ordering/purchasing an i60L after the new year. Forgive my ignorance, but this is my first cart. I would appreciate some insight into battery choices so I will be a bit more knowledgeable when I go to dealer.

1. AGM battery upgrade. Is this something you order from the factory or is it something the dealer does after getting cart from factory?

2. What can I expect for approximate cost to upgrade to AGM?

3. Does the AGM upgrade require a different charger than the standard one provided with lead acid? How about motor controller, I assume that is the same since it still receives 48V.

4. Is Lithium an option to order from factory, or is that a dealership option? I understand this to be an approx $2500-3000 upgrade?

5. With the doubted accuracy of the factory dash mounted charge status, do you recommend an aftermarket simple charge indicator as a backup secondary source of battery status. I envision mounting one in the dash for a quick at a glance comparison, or am I overthinking the necessity of something like this?

Congrats on your I60L:

Contrary to many...my choice is the Crown agm line of batteries...
reasons are:

They are a known reliable quantity and quality
My Crown agm 6vCRV 260ah provide good long range
vs lithium.
My Crown agms now have over 3500 miles on them
with 1 year 4 months. Transferred them from my
previous cart to my I40 as they were just breaking in.
As for charger types The stock Delta Q does not have the
Crown agm specific profile, so I am using an Eagle Pro
charger that my local rep had profiles set up with Crown
as he is the local rep for both. Avoid the Lester Summitt 2
if you choose agms, as their agm profile runs way to hot
and will destroy them...it happened to me...

While my 8x6 volt pack is 630 lbs heavy, my I40 is quick
and fast. My community has stop signs about every 200-
300 ft with numerous hills. In the short space my cart has hit
29 mph and 25 going up hill.
Not too shabby...

I charge mine daily even after short runs, with Eagle Pro
4818i charger can keep plugged in long term...

No lithium related bms (battery management ) issues as
commonly occur, even on factory CC, EasyGo lithiums range and
bms issues.

While lithium batteries offer long life with long warranties,
will those companies be around 5-8 years down the road
to support these warranty claims...?


If you are looking for plug n play maintenance free reliability Crown
agms are the ticket.

Price wise maybe less than lithium, mine were; given that my
dealer credited me for the ones that the Lester Summit 2
destroyed.

Forgot to say that I had my dealer installed ScottyB's volt meter on my dash.
It is hooked up straight to battery pack...it is my reference.

WGflyer....when I first purchased my previous cart, I had ordered a set
of Crown agm 6 crv 220 ah...these were not dealer offered, but suggested these when I inquired about maintenace free.

It was these that the Lester Summitt 2 destroyed by continuously holding
them in a never ending phase 2 charging at 67-68 volts. The Lester
Summitt 2 would not self dvti conclude the charge cycles. If only I had known then.

Fortunately my dealer credited these back to me....and also recomended to speak with Lee Fisher of Batteries by Fisher. Lee not only is the Crown rep
but also for the Dual Pro line of chargers....these are not throw away chargers
like the others, but are field serviceable...outstanding stuff.

To directly answer your question...in my case it was a dealer aftermarket install per my request.

Your cart is an I60L. Will you be off roading with it?....My concern would be
the extra weight of the the 6 crv 260ah 8x 79lbs = 632lbs, the 220ah version
is 69lbs x 8 =552 lbs 80lbs less and still excellent.


This extra weight might not be a problem if you are mainly on paved
with some hills roads...

Consider you passenger loading and gear you will be toting along as well
as distance.

My I40 is not lifted and has the standard 10' wheels. With my Crown 6crv260ah
battery pack, on one run of 27.3 miles with an end voltage reading of 51.5
a rest voltage would have been some higher; the amps used were 48 out
of 260ah is only 18.46 % of capacity used. This left 81.53 % still in the pack.
So if I doubled the driven miles to 54.6 and extrapolate from there the amps
used would be 96 amps/260= 36.92% used with 63% still in the pack. All
else being equal.

Tghe reason I chose the 260ah was that this larger capacity would be more capable of longer distances with less stress on the depth of discharge aspect
of load demand on the pack.

With my typical rides of the day of about 10 - 15 miles i seldom get below
97% soc...and charge every end of duty cycle regardless...
The color soc graph never budges off of a full set of green bars..

My expectation is a good long health service life from my Crown agms.

The Eagle Pro 48181 has a blue tooth app. and the charger has
bulk, absorption, finishing, and float stages of charge and when I asked
Lee fisher about equalize-balance charge, he replied can do for these
agms. I equalize once monthly. Once a week if I wish to. Another great
feature of the 4818i charger...it can be left on. If you are away a month
or more it will equalize-balance charge the pack as well as float charge.

For me as of yet lithium is not prime time ready enough...too many issues
keep popping up...and neither do they have the range my agms have not
even close.

One day perhaps...but by then there will be solid state batteries like
Toyota is now equipping some of their cars with for 2021...

It may understandably seem like I don't like lithium batteries, it is
just that for me they have too many issues and insufficient dealer
infrastructure to support future problems and issues..as of yet
