Default Icon, Advanced EV - other "clones"?

Beginning to follow the Icon threads, and noticed a while back that there is at least one cart (Advanced EV) that appears to be the same or largely the same. Are there others?

Since there are apparently so few of these in user's hands compared to the "big 3", there isn't much out there in terms of typical problems, design deficiencies, premature wear, etc... On paper it looks like a thoughtful design (if awfully similar to Yamaha in some ways...), and a number of owners seem impressed. If that's the case it may push the other guys to turn things up a notch.

I had, however, thought Icon was a unique product, but it appears maybe not.

Does the Advanced EV have the same controller or motor? Otherwise, all golf carts are kind of clones of each other.

Hey fstop..

You are right...the ICON model for model outclasses it's pears in features.
and by a country mile..

For too long the big three have been sitting on their laurels.
Only now are these coming out with lithium...and are still to prove
reliabilty ....

Yet still no dash instrument gauges beyond volts...no speedo, odo
% of soc in terms of a numerical soc, turn signal off on indicators
high beam low beam indicators...not even available as options...only
aftermarket......no 4 wheel hydraulic dis brakes..

Only now are 2 of the big 3 are offering ac motors and at a very cushy
upgrade premium...for them...

These are all standard with ICON at more realistic reasonable prices...
EZGO parts are chinese sourced and probably some are as well for
Club Car..perhaps even Yamaha has some from china as well.

I was contemplating a new CC or EZGO or Yammie...but given their
astronomical prices...they were out of the market for me..

Happy cartin'

They are all made by LV Tong in China. Sold in the US by Icon, Advanced EV, Aetric and I know a local guy who has imported a few containers directly from LV Tong for his rental fleet.

The Aetric model is distributed out of California by Hahm EV and are sold in my area brand new for under $9k with the Toyota AC drive system.

All well and good if you live in Florida, want an electric, and don't mind waiting for parts. Ikon's own website won't tell you where any dealers are. Near as I can tell the nearest is about 1000 miles from me. Yes, they are well appointed, just like the other Chinese clones before them. Everyone loves them - till they break.

EZGO has had lithium for several years. In the fleets first then to the public a couple of years ago. It's a Samsung batttery. Available as an option on several models now including 72v (nominal).

EZGO RXVs are all AC motored (electric versions). First available in 2008. Yamaha first offed AC versions in 2016 I believe. In the fleets first so rare to see one in private hands for awhile. As of now (late 2020/early 2021) all electric Yammies are AC motored. No more DC motored carts.

To some extent the "big 3" operate in a different market. The primary business model for them is fleet sales/leases to golf courses. The other markets are secondary although becoming more important I believe.

You make some valid points about how the carts are equipped. I think you are right about the US manufacturers resting on their laurels. (I include Yamaha in this as all Yammies are manufactured in Newnan Ga.) Their focus is still "golf carts" vs PTVs. where the Icon and clones compete.

The Icons have some nice specs on paper and they look pretty good in person. There are some considerations or red flags for me. You seem to be aware that these carts are sold with various names. There are at least 3 dealers in my city that sell the same cart with different names. Looks like many more nationally.
Golf carts are big business in my community. There is room for competition because there can only be one each CC, EZGO and Yamaha franchise. But, Star has come and gone (back again now), Emerge has come and gone, Polaris has come and gone, Cit-E-Car has come and gone, Zone has come and gone and others I can't even remember. Icon doesn't have history on its side. Also to date there is no parts chain in the big wholesalers like Nivel and Redhawk.
There is also a legal issue. The big 3 comply but the Chinese do not. Hasn't been a problem yet but if the Feds ever decide to crack down the Chinese could abandon the market altogether. Maybe not but something to consider.
I have asked independent shops if they would repair a broken Icon cart (or other Chinese cart) and the answer was an emphatic NO. Maybe this will change over time but this is still a probem for Star and they've been around quite awhile now.
