Re: 1982 harley D model
Some have asbestos against the shell. Don't know that they all do. Somewhere on here someone cut one open with pics. I knew someone had done the surgery. Finally found his thread.

Re: 1982 harley D model
I think some have had fiberglass? Regardless, it would be high heat stuff. It can handle anything a campfire could throw at it.

Re: 1982 harley D model
I did see on the 1982 D models muffler that was very rusted out from being flooded in 2012 and sat until 2016 that it had an inner and outer shell with some sort of packing or insulation between the shells. Due to the way it was constructed IMHO throwing it into a fire isn't the best way to desludge it. Something like an oil pan that has a build up of sludge to me it is far better to soak it in a tub of kerosene than throw it in a camp fire. But everybody has their methods. The OP can decide whichever way he thinks best. I merely relayed my procedure Actually found once we really cleaned up that running something like a stiff bottle brush up the small outlet pipe once a month or so kept the thing trouble free. If you look at the cut open unit the inlet from the last chamber is the pinch point as it enter the small pipe.

Re: 1982 harley D model
Hey guys.
Update: i ended up doing the muffler bonfire, cooked a ton a of crap out of there. Had to drill a hole in the side to get it all out.. see picture below. Shes about 10 pounds lighter now, should be good to go. I have a guy welding it up for me this weekend. Hopefully running smooth come Monday. Thanks for the tips Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

My sled build on pages 1,7,10 and 18. That's Suzi. She is still here and a blast to drive.

Re: 1982 harley D model
In the big block section, sled engine swaps. Top of the page as I seem to be the only one still running a sled engine cart
