Default Testing a throttle micro switch

I have a 2001 gas ST 480 Workhorse cart. Once the throttle is engaged the engine continues running unless I turn the key to the off position. The pedal isn't sticking. My research points me to the cause being the throttle micro switch.

I accessed the switch today. When I press the throttle I hear a click come from the switch. I haven't checked continuity yet. Can anyone tell me if I can test the switch with it in place and powered, or does it need to be disconnected? Also, there are four wires to the switch, red, black, white and green. If I do test in place which wires will +/- touch?

Also, does anyone has other ideas of what is causing the no shut-off issue, if the switch is good?

Sounds like a throttle cable adjustment.

ST480 is a different animal as it should have a Briggs motor. Might have an ignition kill relay that could be failing. I’ll look for a diagram.

Well I couldn’t find a diagram but I would bet that micro switch is a dual purpose switch. One NO and the other NC. When the pedal is pushed one closes and sends voltage to start and the other opens a connection to ground the ignition. When the pedal is released it stops the power to the motor and shorts the coil. Just a guess..

Is there a solenoid on the bottom of the carb?

I don't see any changes to the throttle cable, adjustment, and I'm not sure if the carb has a solenoid. I'll check/recheck these tomorrow.

My understanding of the micro switch Is as kgsc describes. This is why it can affect the engine shutting down if it doesn't cycle correctly. The engine is a B&S. I replaced it with a like new engine a few years ago. The ignition switch is a good call. It is the multi position style that includes the headlight switch. I am going to see if I can find the testing process for that style switch. Thanks all for the input.
