Unhappy 1982 parts in a 1989

Hey guys!! I gust got a NICE looking marathon today! It is a 1989 with the 3pg. Is is painted JD Green with custom yellow seats, Nice! Well, here is the bad news. I took the intake manifold off, and the reed cage is TRASH! I can hear air blow by the rings, all sorts of bad stuff! My question is, i have a Perfectly running 1982 3 wheel. Can i use the motor and drive out of it in my 1989? Let me know! And does anyone know where to get a reed cage? I had no luck!

Jon

OK, well i tore the motor out, and, WOW!!! The skirt is gone off the piston. I think it got raped by the previous owner. I only payed 150 for it so i cant complain too much. The bearings on the crank sound dry as a popcorn fart...REPLACE. Piston trash...REPLACE. The Jug does not seem that it took any damage. Might just hone it out and see how it goes. The only problem i have is that dang Reed Block.

Jon,
That's a nice cart for $150. Unfortunately the only part from your 82 that will fit an 89 is the piston as you can see from this potted history that I shamelessly stole from another site

In mid-year 1989, (early '89 models had the 2pg engine) E-Z-GO changed to the '3pg' engine, leaving the old 2pg to history. The '3pg' engine has the spark plug turned upward, and the whole engine is rotated such that both clutches face the driver side of the golf cart. This rotation allowed for the differential to be changed from a hypoid gearing to a more efficient helical gear design, a change that persists to this day. The lay-down style golf cart muffler for the '3pg' engine is in front of, and slightly above the engine. The piston is about the only part that works in either engine. The crankshaft & clutches, the exhaust system, the carburetor, air intake & control cables all changed.

Still that is just as well as the three wheeler looks way to good to harvest. I never had any luck finding a reed valve for my 86 but several guys seem to have found 2 cycle motor cycle reed valves and used the valve material to repair their ones. Personally I would buy the top end overhaul kit. I have never been a fan of honing out a cylinder as it generally seems to end up oval, egg shaped or narrower at the top.

Good luck with your project
Dave

Dave,

Thanks for the info! My neighbor is a BIG TIME motor guy, so i might see if he can hone it, seeing how he has done it about oooo, id say...a gazillion times! I would not try it, i will leave that to him. If i have any other problems, i will buy a top end kit. Is the gas/oil ratio on this the same as the 2pg? 1oz. oil to 1 Gal. of gas? Thanks for the help Dave!

PS. That Avatar is still creeping my me out!

Yes the ratio is still 128:1 for the 3PG. You know I had so much fun rebuilding mine that I keep loooking on craigslist for another but I never see a bargain like yours. Man I am jealous
