I went cheap on my battery in the columbia and only did the 150a JK. It has not tripped out on me yet and I have drove it a sustained distance of 3.5 miles or so.

Need to do more testing come spring when the ground isn't covered in white stuff.

I pulled my install papers and notes from my build. I have gleaned amp data when I first installed the lithium and I had a few occasions where the amp pull was in the upper 300's. Not 400.

My current Alltrax settings are max amp draw 300 and max motor 300. I've gone up very steep hills with no problems. And some of those hills will demand the full 300 amps. Not for long periods but it's good to know I have that "umph" of amps when I need it.

My "sustained" amp draw in areas falls in the range of 150amp to 200amp. Again depends upon the hill...how high and the terrain.

I am disabled and believe me.....I don't wanna get stuck back in the woods of Southwestern Pa. We have some steep hills here.

So, it would appear a 300amp BMS would do the trick.

So, I think the "techno" jargon would be: 14S, 48V, 300amp BMS. Oh...and CanBus as my charger is CanBus.

Just when I say I can't find one.....I gotta look at the details on this one

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/32568...Cquery_from%3A

Some of these state they are for Lifepo4 and Lithium-Ion. Is that a sales thing or is that right?

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/32568...Cquery_from%3A

Here's 1,000a discharge. https://www.aliexpress.us/item/32568...Cquery_from%3A

My existing ElCon charger is setup to use the CanBus to set voltage charge. I never really needed that option, but that's what I have. These JK on Ali state CanBus is "Customized". Not sure what that means.

That mosfet one part number ending in 30P would probably be good. 300 amps continuous and 600 amps peak it seems.

The 1000 amp one is the contactor based one I was talking about previously.

Can bus is like I have a telephone, but just because you have it, doesn't mean you know how to speak Chinese or German or any other language to the person on the other end.
You'd need both devices to have matching communication protocols.
If your charger can run without it, I wouldnt worry about trying to figure it out.

The lifepo vs li-ion is a setting in the app when you first setup the bms

Here's the chart of available JK BMS's. I've drawn arrows to the one I think you're suggesting may work. As I'm writing this and trying to right size this pic for this post, that product "30P" that I'm referencing won't work. I just looked and it will only support 8 Li-Ion. I have 14. I think the 20S20P product will work. It has 200amp continuous and 350amp MAX for 2 minutes. If I'm drawing over 300amp for 2 minutes I'm somewhere I shouldn't be.

The link is here https://www.aliexpress.us/item/32568...Cquery_from%3A

Now, I've uploaded the documentation for my existing charger. From what I read, on page 2 under Item 4, "Protection Functions" it states that the charger will stop of Can communication fails. So....I think that means if I don't have a Can communication, the charger won't work. Am I right in that?

I would hate to have to get a new charger. I wonder if I attempted to communicate with them and sent the charger documentation if that would be of any help (or luck?)

It's not on the chart.

You could try asking them, or maybe circle back to the charger manufacturer to see if you can disable that feature.

Well.....I sent an email to the BMS company asking them if the unit can be CAN programed.

In addition, I sent an email to ElCON and ask if they can reprogram my charger back to a fixed voltage and what the cost of that would be.

Now.........we wait........

In the meantime, I'm going to search for an onboard fixed 58V max Li-Ion charger for $125 or thereabouts. My existing charger is 8YO.....It just may be time to replace.
