Default 2000 Brake Equalizer Rod Snapped

Hi all

Put all new brake cables and shoes in today. Everything was working fine and suddenly my son came in and said "Dad something is wrong with the brakes they are not working at all"

So i jacked it up and found the rod had snapped in two (from the pedal to the yoke).

I did notice prior that it was very rusty, however i asked my son "have you been stamping your foot down on the brake pedal and trying to skid", he said yes may be once or so.

Anyway im trying to find a quick fix (some threaded rod - threaded coupler and a threaded eye rod) if you know what i mean?

My main question is would the severe rusting have caused it to snap or could it be some internal drum problem? Which im sure i will find out tomorrow when i take it off.

Also i found an exploded view of the mechanism but it doesnt show the rod very well. Has anyone got a better view please

Thanks

could be that because it was rusty the metal was fatigued, coupled with the fact that your son was stomping on the brake. In my experience when my boy says yes maybe once or so that means yeah dad everytime are you kidding its fun. lol

Just an update to the above

Took the rear wheels off this morning and saw that the RHS brake back plate had turned about 120 degrees. Anyway looked further to find a gaping hole in the tube surrounding the axle shaft. I knew it was rusty but not that bad. Looks like i have to get a new axle tube.

Anyone have one for sale?
