To make the VC tach work on a Briggs it needs to be wired directly to the coil of the number 1 and not the kill wire. The kill wire has diodes in it to keep it from interfering with the second coil. Here's a picture of the kill wire on the engine.

I’m starting to understand. So by saying wiring directly to the number one coil does that literally mean to make connection to the actual coil one spark plug wire?

Thanks so much for this info!

Hook on to the ground wire at the coil connection.

You guys are brilliant! Tach now connected to #1 cylinder coil (cylinder closest to flywheel) connected on ground wire between coil and diode. Working!

I’m reviving this post, I recently bought a VC tach for my 18hp Briggs but after installing it to the ground of the coil it still is not working. I hooked it to the wire and put a small zip to where they splice off now.
Photos attached looking for a solution.

On the predator 670 I had to replace one of the ignition coils with a Honda clone replacement from amazon. To wire it splice into the coil wire above the ignition diode box.
