Custom locking seat latch setup....
I've been reading through this forum and I saw that there was a call/need for a way to securely "lock" the seat of your cart. Whether for security reasons, or simply to keep the seat from flying off during transporting, this was necessary.
To begin with, I am no engineer nor draftsman, but I can fabricate and I'm mechanically inclined. I set out with some parameters. The mechanism has to be: simple, effective, clean, durable, and easy to use. So I sketched some ideas and set across the internet and hardware store to retrieve the pieces that would compile my latch. I came up with 5 main pieces.(not including some bolts, nuts, rivets) 1. A spring "slam" latch 2. A "toolbox" universal T-handle with key and lock 3. A "L" side bar (to tie T-handle and slam latch together w/wire cable) 4. About 10" of wire cable 5. A gate striker/catch Now, all said, The total cost of the pieces wasn't cheap. The total was about $70. Mostly that was from the slam latch and T-Handle which are both Stainless. I wanted this to last. I figure doin it once and right. My cart is a 2005 Ezgo TXT. So, I know carts vary so you might probably be able to do a similar latch with modification for other makes. Since I'm limited to 5 pics per post, bear with me. Im going to post a couple of times just to get the photos in. ....... To begin with, I took the rear engine cover off the back. Mine is aluminum diamond plate(I love diamond plate). Proceeded to cut a hole where my T-handle would be mounted. This was off-center towards the drivers side so the actual latch could be centered in the middle of the seat and made easier to operate handle from standing next to the cart. {continued} |

Re: Custom locking seat latch setup....
.......Next, I mounted the T-handle to the plate with rivets.
I then mounted (with bolts and nylon lock nuts)the slam latch in its center position where it would contact the seat the best. I then attached the "L" bracket to the T-handle as close to the top of the handle and trimmed off the rest of the square handle shaft. This is needed because of clearance with the cart frame once to motor cover is placed back on to the cart. I drilled a hole in the end of the "L" bracket and the slam latch and connected them together with the wire cable(75#). So as you turn the T-handle, it pulls the slam latch open, When you turn the T-handle back, the spring in the slam latch resets and is ready to engage the latch striker/keeper. ......... {continued} |

Then I positioned the engine cover back on the cart and put the seat on so I could position the Striker/keeper piece on the bottom of the seat. Once done, mounted the striker/keeper to the seat with some 1" lags and securely screwed the cover back onto cart. This thing works beautifully. And it looks good. |

Re: Custom locking seat latch setup....
I was wondering where you were going with the access cover from the first post and now it all makes sense. Really cool idea and great look and functionality. Thumbs up man!

Re: Custom locking seat latch setup....
Very nice!
I am trying to come up with something like this for my limo cart. When I'm by myself, the rear seat flops up on bumps due to no weight from passengers back there to keep it down. I've thought about trying a pair of gas shocks like you see on a vehicle hood. A latch would be much more secure and unrestricting when trying to service. |
