Have a multimeter? Check to see if you are getting 12 volts at the starter, then check to see if you have ground at starter. You must have both for it to work.

Yes, the two strokes are just forward and reverse. The switch actually changes the direction of the engine.

Re: 89 marathon won't turn over
That indicates a problem with the carb. If you plug that, it will either flood the engine or the bowl on the carb wont fill. It is a vent. Does it run well otherwise? Sounds kind of like the needle isnt seating in the carb. A simple float adjustment may be what it wants. That shaft is actually is a nipple for a small rubber hose. Just putting a small hose on it, about three inches long may take care of the problem.

The new carb will be factory set. They are usually plug and play.

As for float adjustment you just hold the carb upside down with the bowl off and the float should sit level. If it doesn't adjust the tab that sets aganist the needle. After that's done make sure the throttle plate shuts fully and adjust the air screw all the way in and a turn and half back out. Adjust from there. |

I had this issue, it means your jets are clogged. Fully disassemble and clean, took me three tries getting it cleaned fully.
