36V charger on 48V pack?
What, if any, potential damage could occur to the charger, or golf cart, if I were to mistakenly plug a 36V charger into a 48V battery bank?
Let me explain why I'm concerned. I'm about to start a project to convert my 36V Club Car to be a 48V cart (using ScottyB's stuff). I plan to do the whole conversion over a period of months, a few hours at a time. Meanwhile, I want to continue to use the cart. So I'm going to attack it as a bunch of small, sub-projects. Ie. change the solenoid, change the F-R switch, change the controller, change the motor, etc. Once the pack has been changed I'll use the charger that I use with my 48V Yamaha cart. So I'm going to be changing the DC receptacle on the 36V Club Car to be the same as the one on the 48V Yamaha. Only after all the components have been upgraded to handle 48V will I do the last sub-project which will be to increase the voltage of the pack and replace all cables with 2ga.. Therefore, there will be a period of time when the cart still has a 36V pack, but has the receptacle to accept the 48V charger. During that time I plan on (temporarily) putting a 48V Yamaha plug on the end of the 36V charger. I've already confirmed with MAC (the manufacturer of my Yamaha's 48V charger) that if I plug the 48V charger into a 36V pack the charger simply will fail its diagnostics test and not "kick on". I'm concerned about making the opposite mistake and in plugging the 36V Club Car charger into the 48V Yamaha cart. What problems could that cause? Thanks, TJ |

Re: 36V charger on 48V pack?
I am certainly no expert but I would think the 36 volt charger would reach the 44 to 45 volt cut off limit fairly quickly and then just shut off. I think most Chargers also have fuses in them and that would most likely blow also

The plugs in the carts are different. A plug for 36v will not fit into the 48v port.

thinking about your question it may be easier to do the 48 volts at one time. if you set everything up for 36 first. you will have wasted time changing the charger plug and will have to reprogram the controller. also changing the wires on the motor and hooking up the controller and so solonoid is a lot easier without the batteries installed.

I don't think it will hurt the pack. Might blow the fuse in the charger. Obviouslyit wwon't charge the 48v pack... |

The only danger I see is that somebody depletes the pack way below normal limits thinking it is fully charged when in fact it is not even close to getting a charge from the 36v charger. Tie a red flag on the 36v charger end or somehow make it unmistakably identifiable.

Re: 36V charger on 48V pack?
. . . if it were me, the last thing I would change on the conversion cart would be the cart's charging receptacle once the conversion is ready for the 48v charger . . . but that's me . . .
