Default 99 ds stock height hits rev limiter at 18 mph

Is this normal? Seems awfully slow. At 17 to 18 the engine turns off for 2 seconds and keeps doing it till I slow up. Rev limiter? I have the bypassed governor by loosening the nut and spreading the clamp apart on the Gov arm shaft. I had a Yamaha g22 gas cart that ran 30 mph without governor. So I'm not use to hitting the rev limiter at only 18 mph.

Yep. That’s the rev limiter. And That’s about all she’s gonna get assuming stock tires and everything else. You may have a worn clutch, or belt. But even new clutches and belt you won’t get much more than about 20 on a stock cart

I’ve never tried bypassing the governor like that, I just put a zip tie on the gov spring. But either way, if you want more speed you’ll need a lift and bigger tires or a set of gears.

I'm going to change it to the zip tied governor. I like how with the zip tie you can adjust it just right to preven hitting the rev limiter. I'm not sure if I will lift the cart or keep it stock. If I keep it stock height I definitely want 6 to 1 gears. If I lift it I would go with 22 inch tires and no hs gears.
I use this cart for driving through town to the park with my kid. Its street legal

Not sure what state you live in, but 6:1 gears on a fe290 won’t be real happy on large hills. 8:1 would be better I’d think.

I always adjust my zip ties so that it will barely “kiss” the rev limiter... not all the time but that on a long flat straight if I keep it floored it will hit it. Then I can control speed with the pedal and know I’m getting as much as I can out of her :)
