Bench Vises - Best quality
Looking for a bench vise. I want one that I'm never going to have to replace. Something used a few times a week but not daily or heavily. I just don't want to replace it.
Trying to not go harbor freight so I figured Id see if anybody knows anytyhing around here. Have heard names like Wilton, Brund, Older (20+ years) craftsman, thrown around have no experience. Just quick googling had me find a used Wilton 450 locally for $200, and a new one is $800. I see theres a big collector market for Wiltons so I also don't want to pay premium just because of a name (Similar to the premiums people pay for griswold cast iron vs the rest) any tips or info is appreciated |

Wilton vices
New or old. I've had a big Craftsman solid jaw vice for more than 30 yrs too. |

The issues is as much age as it is brand. You have three choices: Junk (read: new and affordable), old used (more $$), or New & good (read: get a second mortgage...).
This is coming from an old fart that usta' sell auto parts and that sorta' stuff. All of mine are 'Columbian" brand and 40+ years old...one is older than I am. Hit the farm and estate auctions....or wait until my poor wife finally knocks me in the head for bad behavior and has a sale..... Jim |

Agree to all.
Had a 40 or so year old Craftsman bolted to a mulberry stump for years ( kept an oil-cloth tarp over it- and it was in AZ ,) Finally, the stump rotted out. The vise got to come in then . . . |

If you want good/new, Yost still make some of their vises here. Their Tradesman line is one of them, I think. Ductile cast and lifetime warranty on em.

I don't know anything about the brand names, but new cheap ones are crap.
I have one I know must be 70 years old and it is a beast. |
