2010 Tomberlin Vanish 4x4 - part for rear drive shaft?
I just bought a 2010 Tomberlin Vanish 4x4, which is in really nice condition and well maintained. I know the Vanish only lasted a few years, so parts will generally be very hard to come by. I read here that Tomberlin was acquired by Columbia, so maybe that could help.
The rear right-side inner CV boot is torn and needs to be replaced. I'm told from the seller that it's been known to be torn for about 2 weeks. Are these sizes the same as any other manufacturer, such as Yamaha, or Kawasaki? The more troubling issue is that rear right drive shaft can be moved left-right by 1/2" or more, which makes me think it could be disengaged from the wheel at times. I've not torn it apart yet, but I suspect I may need the whole right rear drive shaft. Is this even possible to find? Thanks! Mike. |

Re: 2010 Tomberlin Vanish 4x4 - part for rear drive shaft?
Answering my own question in case it may help others.
The outer CV joint was blown out. The casing of the CV was broken and a piece was floating in the grease along with the ball bearings. This is why it felt like it wasn't engaging the right rear wheel and had all the horizontal play. I don't know of a way to rebuild the joint, so I will buy a new right rear shaft from EV Technical Services that's listed in "Tech Support"'s signature block on this forum. So glad to have any kind of source to buy it from! |

Re: 2010 Tomberlin Vanish 4x4 - part for rear drive shaft?
I received the new right rear drive shaft and it's working again. I'm noticing that in 2WD mode, hard turns to the right appears to cause the inner rear tire to skid on pavement. It's like the rear differential is not working properly.
I've not checked the rear differential oil level yet, but I will this weekend. Is there anything else obvious to check why the rear tires are not spinning at different rates during a turn? This can't be as-designed. Thanks, Mike. |

Re: 2010 Tomberlin Vanish 4x4 - part for rear drive shaft?
The Vanish rear end isn't a limited slip, it's more of a posi-lock, meaning that both rear wheels will work to turn both rear wheels at the same speed. So unfortunately, it is as-designed. Better traction in the swamp but not designed for pavement driving. The tend to go through tires pretty fast on pavement.
Not the answer you wanted to hear Michael, but you know how I throw out answers without playing political correctness. |
