Rear bearing removal
It’s a TXT rear axle. I have removed the castle nut, washer and snap ring. The bearing should pull out but I can’t grab it with anything because of the axle tube recess. Do I need a magnet or something to pop it free from the greasy axle shaft?

Re: Rear bearing removal
Turn the hub around and push it on axle all the way forward...put castle nut back on hand tight and use the hub as a puller by snapping it back toward you against the castle nut...Old Tech Tip when puller is not available...

Re: Rear bearing removal
I need to replace my rear bearing soon as well. Curious if you are replacing the seal and rings as well or just the bearing? Trying to determine if I need to get just the bearing or a bearing and seal kit.

Re: Rear bearing removal
If it’s not leaking you can just change the bearings. 6004-rs from a decent parts store.

Re: Rear bearing removal
Thanks. That's helpful. Is it pretty much a given that the axle will have to come all the way out to get the bearing off and new one on?

Re: Rear bearing removal
Yes that's the only way to go...you can pretty much knock the old bearing off with a hammer...to put the new one on I use a jack handle upside down whereas I just slam the handle to the ground and it pushes the bearing tight with one blow...but I'm sure all Techs prob have their own method

Re: Rear bearing removal
Yes pull the axel out. If I remember correctly it goes something like this but there are many ways to skin this cat.
Be sure the axle housing is level or jacked up enough to prevent the diff fluid from running out. The Axle can be placed vertically in a vice with the bearing above the jaws. loosen the vice so the axle can slide up/down. hold the axle below the jaws and raise and slide it down so the vice hammers the bearing off the axle with a few hits. Installing a new bearing can be done by clamping the axle in the vice and using a 6" 3/4 water pipe nipple to slide over the axle and gently tap and drive the bearing into position. |

Re: Rear bearing removal
Thanks, everyone. The new bearing needs to be lightly oiled as well?
