Re: 89 marathon motor upgrade
Welcome to the addiction!
I don't think anyone makes a "kit" for it. You can check with Vegas Carts and ask them to put one together for you. What you're probably looking for is a "clone" engine. It's the more economical way to go. They make an engine mount plate for it and I'm sure they can get you what you need. Really all you need is an engine, mount, primary clutch, v pulley, belts, and ignition switch components. They might even have some wiring kits for the ignition that would work. Here are the most common options https://www.buggiesgonewild.com/showthread.php?t=172255 |

Re: 89 marathon motor upgrade
Not an expert but I think a 1989 marathon is a 2 stroke and would really need a transaxle change to use a 4 stroke such as a clone.

Re: 89 marathon motor upgrade
If your cart has the 2 stroke engine, you'll have to swap the transaxle to a 4 cycle version that has reverse. With a 2 cycle version you'll be fighting an uphill battle with fabrication and you still won't have reverse.
If your cart has the ME29 transaxle then you have the 4 cycle version. Some carts have been converted over the years. Being a 1989 there's no telling who has owned it and what has been done. Post some photos and lets see what we're dealing with |

Re: 89 marathon motor upgrade
Is it a two cycle engine?
Pics of engine and trans would help. |

Re: 89 marathon motor upgrade
Find a newer model, I think 1990 started the 4 stroke engines. To be honest, I don't know if an ME29 transaxle will bolt in that model. I'm not real familiar with the 2 stroke Marathon.
Doesn't your engine sit sideways? Does the drive belt run front to back, or side to side? |
