![]() I just pulled 1985 truckster out of a barn. Sitting about 5 years. New gas,filter,& battery, it started right up and ran. Turned right off because I know nothing about the engine and want to set up. Assumed OMC was a 2 cycle? Found oil filter and a fill tube, dip stick is missing. Any advice is appreciated!

Some interesting things about these: 2 engines available, 18 and 22 hp.... very similiar, spark plug placement is fastest way to tell... but I will leave that for you to discover The use 2 coils, but they are wired strange. Get the manuals from here or other sites. They fire both cylinders every time, there is one set of points, so 1/2 the time the plug fires there is no fuel... strange but very effective, no timing issues that way. Non standard wheel lug spacing... you can keep your wheels as is... or you can get adapters that will make golf cart wheels fit. Have fun, these are great buggies and very strong... my older unit ( '76) is rated for 1/2 ton payload. For reference, Ford Ranger is not rated that high!! Mine will haul 6 people, a cooler full of beer (custom front cooler holder) and tow a full size trailer with 4 canoes to the river..all at once... try that with a Mule or a golf cart!!! Later. Rob. |

![]() OMC 4 cycle...85 should be a 22hp (spark plugs will be on top of cyls/heads)
it is a lost spark engine...very common in small engines...every Briggs/Tecumseh/Honda etc single cyl is a wasted spark engine....nothing new or odd...very common RuppParts.com can help |

I am looking for a complete set of manuals for a 1985 Cushman full one ton. Ie… Service, supplemental, owners, parts I see similar manuals but not exact. 1st post. Hopefully I am in the correct section. |

I added the service manuals for the 1980's vintage Trucksters to the www.sillylittlecars.com website. The main manual contains exploded views of all of the parts, but most are no longer available from anywhere except a donor vehicle. The supplement manual contains the electrical diagrams and the OMC motor information, so this is the manual worth downloading. The difference between the OMC 18 & 22 hp motors is the design of the cylinders. The 22 hp has higher compression and the spark plugs are located above center, where the spark plugs in the 18 hp cylinders are located below center. If you can see the spark plugs when looking down at the motor from above, it's a 22 hp. As far as I have been able to learn, all of the rest of the two motors are identical. There was actually a third OMC model motor made for Cushman. It is a single cylinder version, again with all of the same motor parts, but with a cap over the opening in the crankcase where the 2nd cylinder would be in the 2 cylinder versions. These were made for one model of the Cushman Motor Scooters. Do a search for my posts over the past 10 years and you will learn much of what I have learned and know about the OMC Cushman Trucksters. Mine is shown in my Avatar, but other photos of it were posted in my older posts to this forum. Many of the steering and brake parts came from automotive OEM sources, but there is no cross reference listing for them. I found an older guy working in my local OReiley Auto Parts Store, who has been in the parts business most of his working career. Showing him the broken part was frequently all that was needed for him to go to the shelves and find the new identical one. The new guys at the counter have to use the computer catalog to find anything, so are useless when trying to help find parts that fit Cushman Trucksters. The old guy with years of experience knew where to find what I needed without a computer cross reference. Cushman made many different models for many years. They didn't produce a new model every year. Within each model, they upgraded parts as they became available, so knowing not only the model, but the year of manufacture is necessary to identify each Truckster. The model number is stamped in the frame above the left front wheel. If you bend down as if to begin changing the tire, look straight forward at the black metal frame member and you will find this number. It should also be stamped into the metal plate just to the left of the steering wheel, but this location will also have the year and month of manufacture following the model number. This is the only location that contains this additional information. I check in here almost daily, and attempt to answer questions about the OMC Cushman Trucksters as best as I can. I have owned two and still have the one in my Avatar. I restored it to good reliable condition, but not to new like condition. It gets general use, moving me and my outdoor maintenance tools around my 3 acre property. I have not led an easy life and have many replacement parts in my body because of it, so walking on uneven ground/turf is not easy for me. The truckster gets me where I want to go, but I wish it had the 2 speed differential. It came set up for street use and I need slower speeds when off pavement, so I need to slip the clutch often. Some day I hope to find a two speed differential for it. There is a shift lever for it already installed in the cab, but it's not hooked to anything, and a cap over the location in the differential where the 2 speed lever would be located. A Turf Truckster has this feature. If I ever find a wrecked one to buy I will have what I need. Charley |

I have a problem with my 1985 Cushman Full One Ton (898450-8510) sloppy steering. My steering wheel has 1/4 turn play before it engages. (Single front wheel) It has a severe wobble once I am in second gear. If I put slight tension on the steering wheel either left or right it stops the wobble. Can you suggest the exact correct method to access and what to look for. I am going to try and include a couple pictures for other manuals (not my exact year or model) and are these parts available for purchase? I tried to attach a couple of screen shots. No luck. (Please help on that) |
