Default 2005 G22A won't start unless pushed

Hey guys! You have been a huge help in the past so here goes again. I bought an 05 g22a today. It had been sitting for years. Changed fuel and filter, along with the battery. Oil is clean. On the jack this thing started after a little squirt of starter fluid and about 1 min of cranking. Once it's on the ground, I need to push it downhill to get it started. One it starts it runs pretty good until stopped. Then it needs another push. Thanks for any suggestions!

Possible failing starter/generator brushes. They have rubber inspection caps, be sure to at minimum check 2 that are 90° apart. If the brush height is close to, or below the brush holder that it rides in, they are shot. Pretty easy to replace, after the starter generator is removed.

Pull the drive belt off, clean the carb and get it starting and running good before you go any further.
You should not have to crank anything for a minute(60 seconds) or you will or have damaged the starter.
And when you replace the brushes, also polish the commutator with fine Emory cloth.

Well, new starter, same problem. Will actually start fairly easily on the jack. Put the wheels down and nothing. I'm all out of ideas. Thanks for any help!

Check battery cables and ends, you need amps to turn starter and a corroded cable or loose connection will cause this.
Ground cables are very important also, check for broken or missing ground straps because this engine is rubber isolated from the frame..
Try putting half of a jumper cable from neg battery to starter/generator case.
