Default 1982 harley D model

Finally got to drive the 1982 D model harley today.I used the electric fuel pump posted on BGW in the clone section without a return line. For the muffler I used earlier model muffler with a reducer to take it from the 1 3/4 inlet to the 1 1/4 head pipe from the later model.By cutting the head pipe off from the 1982 muffler and reversing it I was able to match them up.The KYB 343030 shock for the 1962 volvo 122s wagon gave it the best ride it has had in years.Last the cheapo Ebay tachs shows it revs to 5200 rpms. Does anyone know what a reasonable red line is for this engine?

Does your tach have any mention of if its meant for 4 stroke or 2 stroke? There could be a difference in the reading. These engines for sure fire on every stroke. The 4 strokes maybe do maybe don't.

I researched a tach at one point. I couldn't really find anything for these engines except for a digital tach that didn't have good reviews.

Is that tach for a 2 cylinder, 4 cylinder, or possibly 1 cylinder?

Is is for a 2 or 4 stroke?

Yes it is the digital.I have one on my VC 460 powered yamaha, one on my oppie tractor and one on this hd cart. And yes I know how to set it for a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke. As far as being accurate they do have some lag but after it catches up it agrees with my equus on my clone cart. Also bear in mind the 4 stroke clones fire every revolution.

The go karters have a big money tach for 2 strokers but also the equus could be used on the 2 stroke as it can be set for use on the clone that also fires every revolution.

Pictured here is the frame tag on the cart.It does not seem to match up with any cart in the Harley manual. It appears to be a Columbia. Also shown is the electric fuel pump, volvo shock, and fabbed up earlier muffler pipe.Any help or input is welcome.

5K was 81-82 model DX4.

J2 was 82 apparently before they changed to C's.

The motor looks like a Columbia so 82 fits there too.

The frame with the bump in the floor is the Columbia design so that too says 82+. The Harley design has a flat floor and the F/R switch on the floor.

Hard to tell what was going on in that era. It appeared that those last few years under the Harley / AMF management they were trying lots of new things. They had some years with the different looking aluminum axles. You see lots of parts listed for 80 or 81 or 82 only. Maybe they were re designing stuff before the sale? Maybe after the sale the Columbia people were just using up what was left for parts they got in the sale that further complicated things.

Its a Harley by the code that Harley used. An 82 model has many changes compared to a 81 and earlier. The buy back from AMF was completed June 16, 1981 and I have a Harley history book showing Willy G Davidson putting in a gold plated oil dipstick on the first Harley (Electra Glide Heritage model) to roll of the assembly line non-AMF and it was an 81 model. I am guessing Harley already had engineered changes to the golf cart and made a few without the AMF connection until they for what ever reason sold it to Columbia. Does your emblem still say AMF/Harley-Davidson or just Harley-Davidson?

The front end has a leaf spring that is causing BIG camber. Is there a replacement or substitute that is available?

So there were both J2 and C2 82's? Mine like his is a J2 with just HD name plates.

My 82 is a 3 wheeler with steering wheel so I don't know anything about the front spring. My 4 wheeler is an AMF era machine.

So the theory is that it was the return to Harley people that started making changes then gave up and sold it? I guess that would explain the Harley only badges?
