Default 2003 Club Car Gas blowing headlight fuses when engine runs

I just purchased a used 2003 Club Car gas model which came with headlights and tail lights. When I bought it, there was no fuse in the headlight fuse socket. I put a fuse in and it worked fine while the engine was off. Once I start the engine, the fuse blows immediately. Otherwise, the cart seems to operate just fine.

Does this sound like a common problem anyone else here has encountered? possibly a bad voltage regulator?

Any input greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the response!

It runs directly to the positive side of the battery. The negative wires all are grounded to the frame in a common location.

Before the regulator tests read across the grnd connections one may be cruddy and driving the amps up with the increase of voltage from the generator.

I'd put a voltmeter on the light circuit, measure, start the motor, measure. You may have an overvoltage situation. A bad ground will not blow fuses, a short circuit to ground, overvoltage, overcurrent or a shorted light bulb/socket will blow fuses.

You might try to jump the ground wire direct to the neg. side of the battery. Then start the engine to see if fuse blows. I have had prior problems when trying to ground to frame as it is easy to develope poor connection.
