Do what? Your saying that is right? I didn't think that stud was suppose to be grounded to the case

Re: 2001 workhorse over charging the battery
After putting my green wire back on the regulator, I jacked my cart up to test it. I just discovered that mine is charging at 16 volts. I now need to go do some of my own troubleshooting for a problem I didn't know existed.
I didn't think that stud was supposed to be grounded to the case either. It makes no sense that it would be. We need somebody else to remove their green wire, and check for continuity between the df stud, and case. |

Re: 2001 workhorse over charging the battery
If no green field wire is connected to s/g there should be no continuity between case and stud. Connect the green wire and do the same test and it shows continuity

Re: 2001 workhorse over charging the battery
Ok I just checked mine.......
I unplugged green wire from regulator and probed the end of green wire and case, I do have continuity...... Then with green wire plugged back in to regulator I probed that green wire regulator terminal to the case and yes I do have continuity that way also..... The book says at highest governor rpm (whatever that is) it can charge up to 15.5v, the last time I checked mine it was at 5000 rpm and was 16+V |

Re: 2001 workhorse over charging the battery
Dabble, thanks for checking. To me, that seems like the voltage regulator is being bypassed by going straight to ground. I'm going to do what any sensible person would do. I'm going to ignore it until I have some time to play with it. I'm currently building a grapple bucket for the skid steer, and don't have time to play with it.

Re: 2001 workhorse over charging the battery
Puzzle solved I think.
I have four S/G's in my shop. All laying on workbench. None have continuity on the field post when I touch one end of meter to post and other to S/G metal outer housing. On one of my carts after everything is installed it does have continuity even after I unplug the green field wire at V/R. It still has continuity even after removing both battery cables. Good thing I am have carts and S/G 's in my shop The trick is when I remove the cable going to starter solenoid at S/G post there is no continuity at the field post. I hope this didn't mess anyone up. I just had to know myself. I am not going to try and figure this out but this is how all mine are. I don't think I have ever seen a S/G twisted on the field post but it could be done but I always use ignition wrenches and hold the bottom nut. If a person wants to test if his his field wire post on S/G is shorted to ground while still on cart then remove the 4 gauge wire on S/G coming from solenoid before testing or you will get a false reading. Hope this helps |
