Default Scoring in cylinder, why did it happen?

Hi all, I’m new to the forum. My 2000 club car started burning oil last summer so I stripped it down. I found scoring on the cylinder wall. I’m wondering what caused it and if it’s a common problem? I’m hoping it will clean up with honing and use an oversize piston ring set.
Thanks, Trevor

Not it’s not common. However I’ve never seen scoring on these cause smoking. Usually the oil control rings are seized from lack of oil changes or there are other issues. How is your air filter? Carbon buildup? Something caused it but it’s hard to say what. Can you feel the scoring with a fingernail?

You can’t just hone it and use oversized rings. If you switch to oversized rings you need to have it bored.

These engines are very forgiving. If you can’t feel it with a fingernail, it should hone out and use std rings.

I would be looking closely at the air filter.

Could be a stuck or broken ring or debris that got into the cylinder somehow.

A few years ago I took apart a Toyota engine (think it was) and one of the oil control rings had got bent during assembly, so a little tab of it was sticking out and had literally cut a notch down the side of the cylinder, so deep it couldn't be over-bored. It still didn't burn oil.

Now that’s impressive!

Surprisingly, the compression in that cylinder wasn’t “bad” either. If I remember right two other cylinders had little or no compression because of valve damage, broken timing belt. Pretty sure was out of a Corolla, but it was probably closer to 8 or 9 years ago now that I think about it.

Thanks for the reply guys. I can feel the scoring with my fingernail. And the scoring lines up with the split in the bottom ring. I’m hoping it will clean up at .010” oversize but I’m very confident it will at .020” oversize. Then I should be alright to order an oversize piston and ring set. I will check the air filter tomorrow.

My air filter doesn’t look too bad at all. Were you guys thinking a clogged air filter would cause the excessive oil burning?
There is a lot of carbon build up on the exhaust valve. The guide started working up but not much. Maybe 1/8”. Seems like lots of wear on the valves. There is quite a step on the intake valve. I’ll send some more pics. Hopefully they are clearer.

My thought was you were inhaling grit. Besides the carbon, that combustion chamber looks dirty.

Looks like it’s just an engine with a lot of hours and time for a rebuild anyway.

That intake valve is shot. I’ve got all the oem part numbers for the fe290 in my thread in the sticky section. Partzilla is cheap and fast to ship usually
